Summer the first time
« on: August 01, 2009, 08:39:58 AM »
Hi to all, just had to tell the world about my first ever go at control line flying yesterday!
The club expert, Dave, checked the sig Akromaster for any problems then took it for a test flight. Yes I was nervous, hoping i'd done everything right, but Dave put it through its paces with ease! Wingovers, loops, inverted, the whole game. I was relieved and chuffed. Next came my turn.... I crashed 4 times each on the first lap.... a few adjustments were made ( less elevater throw, smaller lightweight handle) and BINGO i was off and away!
What a brilliant feeling even just flying straight and level. After about 15 laps Dave took the handle from my grasp coz I was feeling dizzy, and yes I fell over while the man carried on with the loops etc. I was concerned initially about the auw of 20 ozs including the ASP .12 + 8x5 groupner.+ 50ft lines. I needn't have.... 4 second laps with plenty of power. This engine was turning the prop at 11000 revs static. I cant explain how good it felt, but I'm sure you all know.... I can hardly wait till next time...!
Cheers Phil

Great news.  Isn't it great when you get that first flight.  Put my Brother -in-law up on the B-Slob today and it is first time he didn't get dizzy.  Have fun,   DOC Holliday

:) Thanks for the comments guys. I'm going to try and post a couple of pics of the Akromaster now, but I've not been very good at that in the past.
A few notes: AUW including tank, prop, engine, spinner, tip weight ..20.ozs
Lap times with 50ft lines, 4secs
Engine ASP .12 (1.94cc)
Prop 8x5 Groupner (11000 revs static)
I didn't like the plastic canopy supplied with the kit so used balsa and painted it silver.
 Hope this works... Phil

Beautiful plane! Just one suggestion, that may be too much prop for that engine. I have had good luck with a Thunder Tiger Cyclone 7x4.5 or second choice,an APC 7x4 on that engine.  They prefer to rev a bit, and the lesser pitch will let it rev without screwing you into the ground.... H^^

H^^ Thankyou for the words of encouragement. Will the smaller prop make the plane quicker or slower or about the same? I'm not sure. I'd like to keep it about the same. And will it increase fuel consumption coz the 1 1/2 oz tank lasts too long for me right now, although of course I can put less in or use a smaller tank (which is what I've done)..

Way to go Phil!!  The 7x4 prop should slow the plane a tad and also reduce the run time a little because of the higher revs. Nice job..
