Title: Olympics Biathlon-off topic
Post by: Vincent Judd on February 11, 2018, 04:41:21 PM
Just finished watching the Biathlon event at the Olympics and I have questions.

I know those rifles have to be super hi tech, does anyone know anything about them?  Who makes them, what do they cost?  Are the competitors restricted to using the exact same rifle or are there different types?  What scopes are they using?  What caliber are they shooting?  Do they all have to use the same ammo or does each competitor load his own ammo?

The wind was giving even the best competitors fits, does anyone know what the distance is that they're shooting?

Damn, those guys are good shots considering that their heart rates have to be really jacked up.

I know, I could probably Google most of this information, but it's kind of dead on here lately, hoping to stir up some lively conversation, even if it's not about airplanes.

I want me one of those rifles.   H^^

Several mfrs, Anschutz is one. No optics, peep sights. 22LR is the caliber and  they are shooting 50m.$3500 will get a basic rifle.

They know how to slow their heartbeat down and shoot between heartbeats.  Its not hard when you have that level of physical conditioning.

I shot competitive 22 matches in high school ROTC with service issued rifles... the private schools that use Anschutz would out preform us

There are currently several 22 brands that are dead nutz accurate IF YOU DO YOU PART

I have a Ruger 22/45 Pistol that I can poke 5 of 5 in the same hole on a bench rest and a custom Ruger 10/22 I can raggedely put 10 inside a dime sized hole at 100 yards...again on a bench rest....off hand I suck big dog

Not knocking the high end big dollar rifles ...it is a skill.... got a friend with the very best there is and me and my $235 Ruger 10/22 out scores him...much to his great aggravation.... OK NOT fair I am 63 and he is 87 and has Parkinsons...and we are great friends

Humor my friends,,,  My army buddy above got a new .45 1911 and was showing it off in the parking lot at the VFW...he shook so bad  I made fun of his spray and pray shot group...he laughed so hard we had to take him home for change of depends....grin

It does have old roots.  Ask the Finns (and the Red Army) about the Winter War in 1940.

There aren't all that many companies building accurate straight pull .22s. Now mainly only Anschutz and somebody else (maybe Russian?).

Biathlon used to be a military sport using centerfire cartridges. Many decades ago they went with .22 LR at 50 meters, and the falling targets. That makes it easier to run a contest, and the targets make scoring easier than paper. It is also better for spectators when you can immediately see who hits and who misses.

There's a few different ways the sub-events work. You have to use 5 shot magazines for the 5 falling targets. Sometimes you can additionally load 2 more, one by one. If you leave targets up, you have to ski an extra loop for each target left standing.
