Title: Old King Orange picture.
Post by: Norm Faith Jr. on November 14, 2016, 08:50:03 PM
Does anyone know who this is? This picture is one in my collection...It was taken at the KOI circa 1979-80. Word was,  he was some "top flyer"  from somewhere up North in the middle of the country. He had a van with a rack full of ST powered ships. I didn't last more than 30 seconds against him. (As best I can remember the event) He launched first, I went up, made a half a lap or so, stepped in the circle and he said are you ready? Huh? "Snip!" it was gone. He was good! (just noticed the picture is titled 76-77...error supposed to be 79-80)

Norm at first glance I thought it was Allen Brickhaus...but don't think so after studying the picture a little better.

I don't know if he did in his earlier years or not Norm.  It probably isn't him but there was a resemblance to him when he was younger.  Allen was from Southern Illinois just across the river from Western Kentucky where I grew  up.  I hope you find out who it is.

Could this be an old photo of fierce competitor Robert Birch?

I believe he was from Texas. Flew with Richard Stubblefield and that gang. Can't remember his name.

I made contact with a friend of mine that was at the KOI when that picture was taken...He mentioned two names. Fentriss (spell?) and Frost. Does that "ring a bell with anyone?
BTW, I'm trying to put together a "modeler's album" and I want to be able to identify the photos. I should of done that when I took the pictures.  :P

Hi Ty,

I did not know Allen until he moved to Illinois.  I know one thing, I still miss him a lot.

I think that is Gary Fentress from Sellersburg IN.

I'm certain that is not Gary Frost. Gary lives here in the area and I have known and known of him since before that time, and he never has had a mustache!
Look up some of Allen's early stunt model articles for early pictures of him. There is a bibliography of them in the Stunthanger Hall of Fame section in his biography. I miss my brother Darrel, also! :-\
   Type at you later,

I sent the picture to a friend who flew with him and he confirmed it was Gary. I met Gary around 93 or 94 and he was kind enough to sell me a mk 3 ads give me a couple planes just like the one pictured.

So It's Gary Fentress...Thanks. I believe he won the KOI that year...I know he beat me and my flying partner with ease. Mystery picture solved!
