Hi folks
Thought you might like to see the 'interim' project that I've done whilst I was waiting for a few bits to press on with the BoxCar Chief. I built one of these many years ago and although it wasn't great it's quite quirky and quick to put together. The design is called Jezebel and was a free plan published with Aeromodeller in the early 1990's. Apparently a vintage Italian design, although I don't have a date for it. My original was PAW 2.49 TBR powered and thanks to the huge elevator was a bit so so when it came to flying aerobatics, tending to mush and easily over-controlled. It was tissue covered and sprayed with dark blue car cellulose so also weighed more than necessary . . . :P
Anyway this one has a few changes since it's not intended for vintage comps, just a quick practice model with u/c whilst other things are being built. power this time will be a CS Olly replica which is being run in on a combat wing. The main spar is still spruce but slightly smaller than the one in the first model and I've reduced the elevator slightly by moving the hinge line so it still has the vast tail of the original, but less flaps about! :D I've also moved the front leadout back and will add some tip weight (strangely non shown on the plan and I'm not sure if I built any into the first one) Weight at the moment is 195gms. The fuz is cut by hand from a sheet of 1/4" spruce and the fin is 1/16th plywood. Wingtips are still fretted out from 1/8th plywood.
Looking at it now it reminds me of a Flingel Bunt (Anyone remember those?)

Looks a little like "Kan Doo', another vintage British diesel stunter of the '40s. Hoping it flies better than Kan Doo!

Cheers Floyd - last one was better than a Kandoo although I know what you mean about it's looks now you mention it. (I suspect the extra grunt provided by the more modern motor is responsible for the extra performance though; the only Kandoo I saw fly definitely Kandidn't) ;D
I've added 5gms of tip weight whipped onto the outer spar and it's just drying after a coat of sanding sealer. Next up covering.

Here is a British OTS model that lives up to the kit box description as a great stunter. Kitted by Mercury Models, it is the "Marlin" Plans show an Elfin 1.8. Mine uses an Arden 19.

Ron Prentice produced a reproduction kit a few years ago and it surely is a beauty. I built the Mecury Monitor which was also a fabulous flyer. HJN knew how to make 'em work.

The Flingle Bunt designed by Stoo Holland was the first combat model I competed with powered by a Rivers Silver arrow back in the 60's.

Always quite fancied one of those Mike, even though it wouldn't be competitive against the current crop of vintage combat models being used over here - Just like the look of it.
Funnily enough a current clubmate was a 'works' Rivers combat flyer during the early years and scared many Olly Tiger flyers with it's performance in a Flitestreak

A bit bigger & thicker than a Dominator , a ETA 29 Mk Vi tows one around nicely on 60' lines , so a Fox 35 or anything else'd work too .

Thanks for posting those Matt.
I've a special soft spot for the Early Bird since it was the first model I learned to do manoeuvres with (Started with a Warlord, which did the job of teaching me to go round and round, but felt I learned how to really fly with one of the EB's)
I'll see if I can find a piccy and I'll take a some pics of the CS for you Dennis

Here you go Dennis. Only had about 10 minutes (3 short runs so far) Easy to start on D1000. I'll do some running in at low revs in the wing next using a tank at a time (runs for about 4 minutes) Prop is a cut down 9 x 4 at the moment, but will switch to an 8 x 6 once it's got some time in.
The Twister that it's in weighs 410gms inc. engine, but sans fuel. Covering is Sig Koverall and nylon on the elevator. Graphics are vinyl. (The others are the current practice fleet - Another Twister, a Pirrhana and a Squig. The other engine is a PAW TBR)

Here's the Jezebel all dressed up and with a coat of fuel proofer ready for the engine. 232gms as it stands.
Covering is heavyweight jap over mylar (Not sure where the green stuff that I used for the wingtips came from) 4 coats of thinned dope and a coat of 'Flexi-coat' fuel proofer to finish. I left the spruce and ply fuselage in its natural finish rather than add tissue. Lettering is cut from black jap and applied with a thin coat of dope. I added an extra bracing wire on the U/C because I only had 16swg and the plan called for 14swg - either way it doesn't look like it will stand up to much in the way of heavy landings so i may well be removed at a later date
Next up flight tests . . .
