Plans Amnesty and Free Plans and articles
« on: May 20, 2013, 05:04:27 PM »
An idea to get old plans available free....

I used to run Windy’s website, created many plans for him and edited and put together all of his “emailzines” (called the @club) over the years.

Over the winter I had a number of requests for copies of plans and after printing plans I was told how expensive it is by the recipient ($12-14 per sheet at my local kinkos),
I decided it was time to utilize technology for good.

Not wanting to spend my spare time collating and printing plans and then mailing them all over the planet it struck me that people have already begun to pirate them anyway and maybe it would be great to host a place where digital versions of the plans and articles can be downloaded free.

Folks can then print what they need at the lowest rates they can get locally. All I ask is that you don't then sell them in any form, give them away is fine but no selling on.

There are many pirate plan sites of this type already on the web but the idea here would be to have these plans in one place as well as other articles and info people submit.

The www.windyurtnowski.com site is still live but is going over to a different purpose later this year to host this capability.
Past articles and my hand drawn (oft criticized) control line plans will be posted in the download section once it is built.

What I am needing at the moment is digital copies of any of the plans - PDF or / and CAD. My local print place will scan the originals for me (for a price) so I can load them to the site, but it struck me a few folks may have already done this and might be willing to lend a hand to the process.

If you already have digital plans of any of these designs and would be willing to provide them I will be happy to post an acknowledgement to you for your efforts and add any notes you think are relevant.

Some of the designs I have drawn include;

Cardinal evolution (40 size cardinal)
Strega 40
Tsunami 40
Typhoon 60 and 40
Miss Ashley II

Other plans include Hop 40
Etc, etc

If you can help in any way please PM me care of this site, I will be most grateful for your help.

If you cant help, but would just like copies when they are loaded to the site you can add your name to the email list at http://www.windyurtnowski.com

Thanks for your help.

Bobs, Your Uncle ( you can't be my uncle, I'm Cuban) if you need any CAD work let me know, I'll take care of you. Also, John Miller is also highly skilled, and you may want to ask him-he runs the CAD Forum here.

Most generous!

I frequent a few websites where plans are being collected for free distribution. Would posting your plans on those sites fall under "give them away is fine"?

Here are the sites that I have in mind:
http://www.outerzone.co.uk/ (free for all)
http://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_plans/index.php (registration required to download or upload)
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1288656 (free for all. totally unstructured because it is a forum thread)
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

Thanks PerttiMe,

The ideal is not to publish them on the sites you mention. Outerzone is the least offensive as it provides a free service to builders and gives credit for where they were found on the web, but I really would prefer we get them up on Windys site first if possible as credit to him and myself as original authors. As I said I would be very grateful for your help.

Just email me with any digital plans and I will give you credit and publish them at www.windyurtnowski.com

Thanks for your encouragement with this I am profoundly grateful.

Thanks PerttiMe,

The ideal is not to publish them on these sites at least not initially - Hippocket for instance is a paying "for profit" site (despite what it says about donations). Outerzone is the least offensive as it provides a free service to builders and gives credit for where they were found on the web, but I really would prefer we get them up on Windys site first if possible, as I said I would be very grateful for your help.

Thanks for your encouragement with this.

I could host them here and if you think this is a for profit site I could let you run it. It ends up costing me every year.

I didn't Know Hippocket was your site Robert, is that right?

The idea as windys site is still live was to put all things Windy and myself up for free download, plans videos, articles etc. I would think having a plans download section on stunt hangar would be an amazing resource.

No only this one. But I could still host them here. The one thing I don't understand is we are paying for unlimited but yet my file count is limited to 300000. Yet the file size can be any size. I don't understand that part. We are now over 60% of that 300000 and I am looking into archiving some of the older threads.

Fair enough.

I don't seem to have any of the plans that you mention, or any of your plans at all. That "must" mean that they are not on the mentioned sites either. As far as I know, those sites are very much aware of copyright matters, so questionable files are suspended, checked, and removed if that seems to be the right - and legal - thing to do.

One thing, though:
on those sites, preservation is one of MY priorities. Storing files in multiple places makes it less likely for one crash, bankruptcy, or death to make things totally disappear. At least precious files must be stored on multiple computers and be accessible to multiple persons.

"Hippocket for instance is a paying "for profit" site (despite what it says about donations)." Quote from Bobs Your Uncle.  Absolutely NOT true.  Dave is a personal friend of mine and he would be horrified to hear this unfounded rumor.  He prides himself on running an ad free site and does not rely on donations (although he will take them, but will print you a plan for your trouble!) at all.  If you have any questions and would like to talk to Dave, send me an IM and I will send you his phone number or email address.  I don't know where this statement comes from, but it is simply untrue.

Glenn, I stand corrected.

The last time I looked at hippocket in the dim and distant past I remembered that they had a pack price for downloads you paid in advance for a "pack" a number of downloads (called a donation), they are not charging for access to plans as of today as you point out, and you clearly have to be registered (no bad thing).  So you are right and I am wrong on this, I am glad the policy is for free downloads and that they are not charging for the plans others created - hopefully registration is also as open. I will amend my post above.

You did mention "He prides himself on running an ad free site " The site is not ad free as of today and I see no problem with advertising to support a volunteer hobby site. The advertising is often relevant and helpful as its targeted to its readers recent site searches (in Hippockets case).

However we seem to be veering off topic here. I have had a lot of emails from folks who are delighted we are planning to do this and so I will press ahead as time allows. Again any help will be gratefully received.

Thanks

I think you might be confusing the Hippocket plans site with the Co-op plans site.

See: http://www.co-op-plans.com/magento/

Hippocket has never charged for downloads whereas the Co-op has.

That said the more plans digitized and distributed the better.

Nope, and yes they have. I did a "WayBack Machine" search just to make sure my memory wasn't failing me. The "Pack Button" used to refer to a value for the plan presented (sort of like points) but these buttons no longer have a value presented.

I have been a faithful member of Hip Pocket since the very beginning of its history....and they never sold anything that I remember.  Dave (Ratz) has a printing business and he does print plans for modelers.  Perhaps this is what your thinking of.  He does not supply the plans though, the modelers supply the plans (usually in PDF or some other email friendly venue) and Dave simply prints and sends off as many copies as needed.  I might add, he does this at a very reasonable rate and on very high quality paper. H^^

As an aside, I think what your doing is a very cool thing and the more sites that do this the better.  Hip Pocket has a very large collection of free plans, in all major modelling venues including control line.  The more sites that do thius sort of thing, the more plans will be saved. H^^

I wonder how long this will go on?  There are people out there that pay for their modeling with plans services with permission from the original designers as well as places like the AMA, who makes little profit from their sales.   I myself have loaned plans to individuals for their use and the original plans returned to me.

Now the last time I got a set of plans off the bay that  the seller only sends an e-mail set of plans,  it took me several tries to get them loaded to a disc.   By the time I got a printed copy it cost more than they were worth after I found out they were available as a printed copy from somewhere else.
