I have looked around the forum for photo resizing info. Is so many K the same as so many KB? On my computer if I get down to 800 KB it shows my photo to be about an inch wide. What do I need to know. I would like to post photos of my three biplanes. Many thanks for any help. SLEEPY

The suggested size of 600 X 450 should be OK for posting (if not increase or decrease the size as needed). "Load" your photo in PIXresizer and save it (be sure to save to a place where you can easily find it again).
That is about it.

10 pictures or 1,000kb's is the limit per post. Also please don't start a thread, put one picture on the first post, start a new thread, and put another picture on your post there, etc. That's really the height of not good, I think... However, if you were to put 50 pics on one thread, then the loading becomes very slow and makes the whole thread pretty hopeless. Don't do that, either! It's not hard to get a good picture down to under 50kb, but 100kb is duck soup. If you have two pics and they're both over 500kb, then you can only attach one per post. ??? Steve

I use pixresizer too .. Great simple program for all kinds of resizing photo to post and to e/mail.. Quality does not suffer for posting . I usually do the entire group of photos at one time and rename the group as compressed...

Most photos can be re sized to about 720x480 dpi, that's "dots per inch", how digital photos are measured. Most digital cameras record at 72 dpi; divide the 720x480 measurements by 72, and you'll get the pictures measurements in inches. If the photos are saved in ".jpg" format (what most cameras shoot and save in), you should have a file in the neighborhood of 50 to 100 KB . . . depending on photo content. 72 dpi is fine for the web, as it's not capable of much more. The human eye can detect the dots up till about 250-300 dpi. That's why if you print a 720x480 picture to a full 8x10 size you'll see the pixilazation.
If you have pictures that are only an inch wide but are 800kb, then most likely they are 300dpi pictures. Most programs allow you to resample pictures; resample to 72dpi and you'll have a much bigger picture.
I'm not familiar with the program suggestions so far; I've always used Corel PhotoPaint, but I'm sure they would suit your needs well. If you're shooting pictures you know are destined for the web (or email), then set the camera resolution to a lower setting and you won't have to use a program to resample down.

off topic (again). I use irfanview, but can't figure how to "crop". I can resanple/resize to reduce pixel count, but I'd like to crop the edges to eliminate background.
Any ideas?

On the pic you want to crop, "mouse" a rectangle on the pic the size you want, then under EDIT click on "crop selection"

All you really have to do is open the picture in irfanview --
click and drag (an outline will form) around the area you wish to crop to
when you release the mouse button, a box will be displayed around your chosen area
Under the edit menu, there is a "Crop Selection" entry (or you can press <control>+y, without pulling down
the edit menu).
The selected area will be retained - you can now resize or otherwise manipulate the resulting picture. Be sure and save it under a new name, if you wish to retain the original picture.
You can also "Create Custom Selection" (also under the Edit menu). This will open a window in which you type the specifications of the 'Selection' you wish to make, and then you can crop to that.

Click on the scissors icon on the toolbar. It's small! Draw the rectangle around what you want to keep, starting in the top left corner. Then click "edit", and select "crop selection" from the dropdown menu. So easy, a rokit scientist can do it. LL~ Steve
