OK guys? Name a plane?
« on: February 11, 2007, 10:19:22 AM »
I am all set to start building my next semi scale stunter. I will be filming this and making it for sale on CD. The unique thing about this CD set  is I am going to show from concept to finish of a Control line stunt plane. The problem I am having is I do not know what to build. So you decide. Put up your suggestion today and I start ASAP.

1st CD Concept and layout and kit cutting.
2nd CD component construction and tools.
3rd CD will be alignment and control install.
4th CD will be finish and finishing products I use.
The 5th and final will be flight testing and trim.

The  delivery times for Cd's will be as follows. It takes me about 3 months to do an airplane and I am adding the CD editing so we will say 4 months from start date. I will mail Cd's as they are finished or all at once. The cost of each CD will be $19.95 plus shipping or $100.00 for the set shipping included.

So please make a suggestion and post it here. This will not be a slab side airplane so fat fuse welcome!

To Order use PayPal donation button and specify your CD choice be sure to include your address.

I will not be building anyones plane. This is a concept plane from start to finish. So it will include the design part as well as building. Just like I did my S6B

Let me narrow this down. WW2 fighter single engine or a Pylon type racer. I had at one time thought about a Shoestring with modern dimensions.

Please try to keep in mind the profile I am looking for. I will be building a Piped airplane so the wing should not sit on the bottom of the Fuse. I can fudge some like I did on the S6B but I am looking for something when I am done will look semi scale. The wing can have a tapered trailing edge or could be semi elliptical.

Bill Simons Shoestring,(I was there for the original) pretty such covers that.  Hard to believe that from the time I watched him fly that plane back in New York to now, the bird has become classic legal! Man, I am getting up there!!!

I think that Windy's and Joe Adamusko's Spitifire series pretty covers that one. Between the 5 plane series already built between the two of them, and the scale planform wing with dihedral that they are building now, I would call that one paid.

But, it sure would be nice to see a kick-ass FW190 done step by step.

Robert, I think that a serious model of an Edge, Extra, Staudacher, or Cap and even a Sukoi would be an excellent project, especialy if it was kept to scale outlines and moments...Maybe a new arena in PA??.........Phil

Well, you could try the Voodoo or Strega Mustang racer. I've got plans on the board for a Rare Bear. Low wing and dihedral with the pipe through the middle of the fuse (over the wing). Sucker is so wide that the pipe tunnel and controls can share the space. Might consider something like a Russian WWII fighter or something equally esoteric. I'm a fan of several radial cowl fighter planes including the Focke Wulf.

Really just depends on what turns you on.

The "Raven" would be an excellent subject. Midwing, suitable cowl, gorgeous color scheme. I took these pics at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, McMinnville, OR. Spruce Goose in the background in a few pics.  y1 Steve

Art Chester's "Jeep'- mid wing, inverted inline engine so you should have room for a standard tank, and plenty of room below the wing for the pipe.

Grumman Guardian or a Wildcat would give room for a pipe. Not to many planes of WW2 era that give to using a pipe. A Chance Vought Vindicator is a kinda unknown neat plane but the wing is to low. Several of the Shoestring era racers would be good candidates ,what about a Rivets.

Robert,

Thanks for taking on this project. It looks like it will be a benefit to us all. :-)

Like many others I like the FW 190/FW Ta152 series for CL stunt. There are two good CL FW designs already out there though, so you would not be too original with one of these.

Another plane that fits your specs is the Edge. It is a midwing, making room for your pipe. The 0-0-0 Eng/wing/tail would also make for a good CL set up. Here is their web site with photos, specs, great paint schemes, etc.

             http://www.zivko.com/edge/site.html

The Extra 300L would be another good choice, but they are very common. The Edge would be unique. I really like the looks of the Extra 300L, I own three of them in 37% scale and they fly great, but one of my favorite planes is my little, pattern size, 25% scale Edge. It flys great, even with it's small OS 1.60. It is very solid, and looks good upright or inverted. I often think it would make a wonderful CL plane.

To my knowledge no one has done a modern Edge in CL, and the scale paint schemes available are way Cooooool. :-)

Robert,

How about a Formula One Air Racer.  I have been looking at some of the recent Formula One's and they offer a low slung belly and a slender, blended appearance.  It would also allow you to go semi scale or be as creative as you want to with the finish.

I have to second the ieda of one of the current unlimited class full scale areobatic aircraft.  It has been a while since a similar model has been prominent in copetition.  I believe it was the 90 Nats with Gid Atkinson and his Lazer.  We fly aerobatics!  What could be more appropriate than one of our own for a semi scale subject?

Robert,

Here is a neat looking, custom racer for your consideration.  The Long "Midget Mustang" has long been a favorite of mine, and this copy, with a very interesting paint scheme, appears to be a "sport" version, rather than for racing.

The low wing may be a problem for you, but the wing mounted gear always has a great look to it, and the cheek cowls are a plus for an uncommon appearance item.

The second photo is a Stafford "Midget Mustang" kit that I used to fly in Formula 1 RC.  The lady holding the plane....that's my pit crew.

Good luck...we'll be following your build.

Cheers.

If it has to be simi-scale and a racing airplane, how about the Hughes H-1 or even the Hughes twin that he crashed and nearly killed himself in?  I don't remember it's name though.

Robert,

If you like racers, you may want to look at this site for some ideas. Many of these planes already have the lines, and moments for our CL stunt planes of today. The Golden Age of Air Racing produced many beautiful planes. The radial engine ones were great, but with their short nose moment, they would be a challenge for our light IC power systems.

A CL Gee Bee would be fantastic. I got to see a modern replica fly  aerobatics at an airshow. Great looking plane, flew very well, beautiful paint scheme. .... Maybe you could go electric, and have Thunder Power make you a battery in a round motor shape? Hummmmm. ;-)

    http://www.airracinghistory.freeola.com/aircraft.htm

I like the "Miss Los Angeles". It already has perfect, Nobler like, moments for CL. ;-) The scale all Red pint job would look good too.

By now you must have a dart board set up in your shop with all the planes you would like to build. ...... I hope your dart lands well. :-)

I am with you on the Miss Los Angeles, I thought I had posted that and the Firecracker, but looking back I guess it didnt make it from my puter to the post for some reason. Love the classic racers like this, the inverted inline engines make them good prospects I feel too.

The Meteor (is that what they call it?) racer would be WAY cool! It's one that I've always wanted to do myself, silver, with the Champion spark plug graphics and the works.

A Wildcat would also be neat, (Saito .91? VD~) and the mid wing is just begging for it.
