Our home owner's association wants me to paint my mailbox, because it's gotten rusty. It wouldn't have gotten rusty if it was actually zinc plated, like it claimed to be.  HB~>  It was actually painted with aluminum paint, IMO. I'm thinking about just covering it with duct tape, and see if they like that! Would Monokote work better? How about duct tape as an underlayment for the Monokote? Anybody know what the USPS regs are on this?  n~ Steve

When I lived across the street the city cited me for my chain link fence being rusted. The city said paint it. I painted it brown. Problem solved forever. Think about it??

I sense bought the house across the street and the city has given me no more problems. These are tricks I learned from my Dad. Once at the bar he owned they inspector made him put in a urinal. He objected to the idea. But was fined. So he did put one in. Sense there was no code as the the height of the urinal. he installed it chest high. The inspector came in and said that no one would be able to use this. Dad said that's the idea. He was not cited again because of no code written as to the placement. He never had to clean it.

One other thing he did was, customer use to punch their fists in the wall above the john. TEE HEE he filled the wall with cement. Problem solved.

I like the idea of painting it 'rusty' color! I'm kinda irked about having to paint something. One man's rust is another man's "patina"!!!  LL~ Steve

just have the can marked "Patina red"
then when they complain its rusty, show them the can.
i have seen some high dollar street rods done in rusty patina lately. even saw one in a national magazine that was actually fiberglass painted to look like rust, bubbles and all! that may have been a little over the top to paint a severall thousand dollar glass body to look like old rust.

You live in a really civilized 'hood.

Most mailboxes don't have time to rust.

This one is only 29 years old. I'm tempted to take it back to McLendon's Hardware and ask for a replacement.  y1 Steve

Steve, I got the treatment 10 years ago from the superior ones too. I put up a black plastic box(soft like tupperware). Wont rust. It's now turned grey from the sun exposure. I'm just waiting for the next change in policy... LL~

While it's fun to contemplate side-stepping the HOA, or even revenge upon them, it's seldom a productive process; and can be costly at least in time (sometimes money). We have one self-appointed "Mrs. Grundy",male version, who delights in riding around the entire subdivision in his golf cart (he doesn't play!) looking for violations real or imagined.

Two years ago, we were cited for having "improperly trimmed trees", which provided insufficient clearance for vehicles. I questioned that, as there was over 8' between bottom branches and pavement.  This turkey insisted that the regulation was written for schoolbuses, and that we weren't in compliance. I merely asked them for a list of all other houses cited for a similar problem, as no one met this ridiculous requirement. We never received an answer, and don't expect to.

My neighbor was cited by the HOA for using thewrong style of number on his mailbox. He also told me that the only place to get an approved mailbox and numbers is on the other side of town. So much for your local DIY store.

We have a parking NAZI in our HOA!  mw~

She leaves nasty notes on cars, and has been seen meeting the tow trucks in the wee hours, to have people towed away ($265 charge for the first day, and additional daily charges if you can't bail your vehicle out within 24 hours).

One fellow was looking at a unit for sale, and came back to find a threatening note on his car. Haven't seen him since.  ;D
