Off Topic---IrfanView version for Windows 8.1???
« on: December 03, 2014, 09:55:23 PM »
My dear son upgraded his old computer, added my old hardrive, transferred some stuff, but not IrfanView. He set it up with Gimp, which I just looked at for the first time. Anybody have IrfanView with Win8.1? Which version, and where did you download it from? I downloaded my original from TuCows...they don't show one that's for 8.1. Arrrrggg!  :X Steve

Just get the latest version -- 4.38.  The requirements are minimums so "Windows 7 (or better)".

Here are the 'specs' as posted on another download site.  Note that under Operating System Support it says "Windows (all)":

IrfanView 4.38
Edit and convert graphics files with this top-notch image viewer.

Have you tried installing the version you have? It may work???

As for myself I refuse to own a computer with windows 8 and hope I'm long gone before Microsoft's strong arm tactics forces me too. I have at least gone to dual boot between XP and Windows 7 but spend most of my time on XP. I can just barely tolerate Windows 7 and that is after I disable as much of the big brother crap as I can. I can just imagine what trying to accomplish something other than social media on Windows 8 must be like.

Thanks to all! I got it downloaded from TuCows again, and put a new "Test Pictures" folder on my desktop and a shortcut icon to IrfanView. Took a picture from last night and resized, rotated, and compressed it to just under 100kb. A bit different, but got 'er done! There are a bunch of options to check and uncheck...seems Google Chrome and toolbar are trying to force themselves onto everybody's machines...but I defeated that attempt. I like Google Search, but not Chrome. Am I being unreasonable? I think NOT!Well, that could be taken two ways, but toolbars are the cause of a lot of troubles, so stay on the alert for their attempts to find a home on your box!

If anybody has a Trader Jose's in their neighborhood, I can't recommend this stuff. Kinda nasty. Not nasty enough to pour down the sink, but nasty enough to not buy more. Kinda like Corona...a slice of lime might be just what it needs, to cover the kerosene flavor! FYI. I may try their Pilsner next time...or not.   D>K Steve

Windows 8 wasn't written by one person. It was done as a "team" effort; except there were numerous teams developing different parts. The teams didn't communicate much and as a result the parts don't fit all that well. At least that's what my cousin says and he's a Microsoft certified developer.

One of my best friends is the IT manager for a community college with over 3000 computers. On my new desktop, he advised to get Win Pro7 with an upgrade to Win8 Pro at my discretion. Win Pro7 has worked out great. Loads in 5 sec.

Well I'm not allowed to down load any thing as far as computer programs.  The tech at the repair shop says he is getting a lot of PC's to clean up and reload to Windows 7.   Also how do you convince the daughter that the kids need to not down load the games that pop up all the time.   Makes for slow running until I go and delete them, much to her displeasure.

You're not being unreasonable. I have switched to Fire Fox as my browser, and DuckDuckgo.com as my search engine. DDG doesn't share any info with anyone, and seems just as fast and good as the Goog.

And forget the kerosene. Try 1554 from New Belgium Brewing. Very dark, but doesn't taste "heavy" or have any after taste. Realllllyyyy Gooooood!

IMO, it's best to have only one person running a computer. With multiple users, somebody changes a setting and somebody doesn't like it and things just go downhill from there. Don't let the GK's play on YOUR computer. It's for important stuff, like ordering from Stunt Hangar Hobby and Tackle Warehouse online! I'd delete every game, including all the ones that come on the computer. That's what Nintendo is for!  D>K Grumpy

If you have only one person as administrator, the others can't make changes.
