Airplanes looking for a couple of pilots
« on: November 29, 2022, 01:05:02 PM »
I am in the midst of building two new Caprice models (not entirely sure what the plural of Caprice is...), and I need a couple of the old William's Brothers 1/5th scale pilots (the ones with the caps or helmets preferred; not the ones with just hair). Does anyone have a couple they are willing to part with? Please send me a PM of you can help.

Dave Midgley formed a bunch of really great looking new canopies for these models, and I have  bunch left over in case anyone out there wants to build a Caprice (no one but me is crazy enough to build two at once). I also have plans available for the Caprice if needed.

Attached are a couple of photos of one of the new Caprice models nearing completion. In the background in the first photo is the second Caprice.

How wide and tall do you need the pilots to be?

Hi Fred:

I think the pilot's head should be between 3/4 and 1-inch tall. All I really need is the head as this is a racer-like model in aesthetics, and the pilots in most racers just have their heads exposed above the turtle deck.

Thanks - Bob

lovely how you build clean and flawless ships!
these pilots at hobbyking are molded after William bros and are very light and well finished, you may have them easy in USA wearehouses:

would lobe to build a Caprice myself in the near future. classy looking ships!

He has a brother who is also unemployed.  1" styrofoam fishing float.  My new one has that same racing look.

I have these available @N/C, except for postage. I'm in Canada so delivery might take awhile and international postage is expensive.
It's probably best if you can find a source in the USA. The small one is 3/4" high and the larger one is 1 1/4" high (measured chin to top of helmet).

passing the time I plastered a ' action man ' head with tissue scraps and PVA . Had to slit it up the back - before fully cured , and glue the seam .
ended up flatter ( narrower ) which improved his looks ! . Fuse wire for goggle frame & clear stuff , after a lick or two of paint .

Was rather light , so I thought Id mention it . Think it was waxed , Rubbed down with thumb as the tissue , about 4 or 6 layers , dried .

You can see the flat head , was the trick , in this instance .  ;)

Well! The response has been overwhelming. I now have enough pilots for several Caprices, and my thanks go out to all who got in touch with me to help. I'll actually be sending a few back after I look at them all and find the ones that fit best.

What a great bunch of guys!

Bob
