Odd engine - What is it?
« on: November 27, 2011, 08:34:00 AM »
From my junk box.
Appears to be around a 45 to 50 size.
New, no markings except a serial number - 515.
Can anyone identify it?

It is a a D.E.W. It was originally made in Kimball, Nebraska in the early 1960's. DEW stood for the owner, Dale E. Wood. It was not a great success. By 1965, the engine was bought by Ray Kesteloot in California and sold under the Kustom name. On the Kustoms, the word DEW was ground off the bypass and replaced with a sticker. There was a .61 R/C version and a .51 stunt version. There may have been more.

Hi Bob,
Has the look of an early Merco49 / 61, but with that head and venturi, it can't be. Anyone else got a clue?

Regards,

Andrew.

De got it right.  It is a Kustom; the sticker has fallen off.  The DEW has been ground away.
