Title: Oct 5 Ringmaster Day - Bipe Build
Post by: goozgog on September 29, 2013, 07:34:30 AM
Oct 5 & 6 are the days to dust off our Ringmasters
and crank in some flights. I've always wanted a bigger
version  of the Sterling 1/2A biplane but there never
really was one.

What I have done is simply attach two Jr. Ringmaster
wings to a S-1 fuselage and tail. Except for making the
attachment points and struts and centering the bell
crank, that's all this is. It looks good to me.
With all the Ringmasters built during the last
62 years, I doubt if I'm the first person to do this.

The pictures show the 1960 Ringmaster kit I used as
reference and the discarded Sterling Jr. Ringmaster wing
I copied. To be honest, I didn't do much math for this
except some simple C/G stuff. I borrowed the separation
and stagger geometry from the 38 Special.
Wing area is almost exactly 400 sq/in compared to
390 for an S-1.

It's interesting to know that the Sterling wing from a
kit weighs 5.5 oz and the identical copy built from
Lone Star wood weighs 2.2 oz. The Sterling stuff might
actually be oak.

So dig out what's left of your relics and join the world
in this happy little event next weekend.

I'll report back here and let everyone know if it flies or not.

Cheers!

WOW that looks great.
I am in the process of building a RM Bibe as well. No way will it be ready in time for the Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon, this year anyway. I'm kind of a slow builder. Going for a full built up fuse. Bought laser cut ribs for a Jr from Brodack and then stretched the wings for about 480 sq". I am hoping mine looks as good as yours. Doing a build thread over on brotherhood of the ring site.

Again sharp looking RM

Hey Ken (P-51); I knew I wasn't alone.
Any chance of a picture?
I've tried to register over at
Brotherhood of the Ring but it never
accepted me. Probably very wise.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement!

That looks great!
A nice Red Maple Leaf on the fin would be the finishing touch.

Hi Keith

So far there isn't much picture wise to post. I have the wings framed up. Tail feathers, and firwall cut, and a rough drawing of the fuse. A rough drawing is all I need to build from as I mostly just wing it as I go. ;D (yeah bad pun but I love bad puns).

I also am repeat posting on RCUniverse.       http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/control-lines-231/11585751-ringmaster-bi-plane.html

Here are 2 pics of basically where I am at with this build.
