The Patternmaster and the El-Jay

With Big Jim Greenaway sadly no longer with us, who would be a godd source for acquiring the plans for his designs?

I know the Cardinal is essentially the Patternmaster, but I'm interested in taking a closer look at the numbers for the El-Jay, with the high aspect wing and the huge flaps.

Hey Mike,

The Cardinal is not a PM exactly. Windy wound up shortening the Chord by a 1/2 inch.
You could probably get a set of the Plans either from Mike Rogers or Jose Modesto.

Big Jim built 4 Patternmasters. 1972,73,75,77. the 1977 is the 60 size that everyone became familiar with and Bob Baron won the nats with. ( I crashed the 75 ship in 1982 never change your mind in a maneuver)

Big Jim built 2 L J's i have Big Jims second LJ ST46 trike gear at home.  I also have his original plans andfoam cutting templates.
the LJ has 3 brothers SJ= small jim 35size,  LJ= large Jim 46, BJ= Big jim ST60 (this is the model that Windy used for his first of 5 top five finishes at the nats 82,3,4,5,6 a couple were all were front row planes) and the SPECTACULAR 900
Mike Rogers,Hank forbes and Bob Baron all built LJ's and SJ"s

Bob Barons 84 worlds plane was to have been the LJ46 with an FSR motor but at the practice sessions Mike Rogers and Bob Baron decided to fly the Avanti to second place. Big Jim always reminded Bob that if he woild have flown the LJ he would have won.

Windy sent me some drawings back in 85 and I built an LJ. Still have a couple of pictures that I'll scan if I can get my scanner working again.

The El-jay looks abit like Bob Baron's Avanti, well the fuse anyway.

Er Um , just found these on a orstrawian fing , Flushing Meadow . Patternmaster in background , might stir a few memories .



Seeing the post above mentions the ' Avanti ' , thtll save a bit of finger walking . better mention Bob Baron , so search fuction finds it .

I ordered the plans of the original several years ago and If I am not mistaken, I ordered them through AMA.  I cut them up and made templates and like an idiot did not make a copy of them.

Brett Buck is correct in stating stick to the original 60 size plan, "but" there is a version called the "PM Classic" which I have the plans for
this is the current day Patternmaster the East Coast guys fly, from memory Bill Suarez and Mike Rogers may have drawn it up,the plan shows
3 different fin outlines,cabin rear fuzz etc.  I think its even the same model that Bob "Champione" Lampione flys (pictured).

Very pretty airplane.  Looks like he used up all his nearly empty bottles of color...which isn't a bad idea.  Might get me to actually paint something.

I'm pretty sure that is Jeff Reeves' (Sydney, OZ) airplane and might have been based on the Imitation of which there were many variants in roughly that same era.  At the very least it has the same sort of pencil slim, swoopy look to it that characterized a number of designs of the era.

(Edit)  After a longer glance the thin, rather pointed entry airfoil makes it unlikely that it was based on my designs of the era as I was sort of into slightly thicker/blunter sections with forward high points at the time.  Probably totally Jeff's effort.

1984 Kareela at the World Championships

1986 Introducing Kareela II
Kareela II is the first of two planes that I build in the USA. Here it hangs on the wall of our garage. The two yellow planes remained in the USA and the original Kareela still exists.

Should be a Kareela Thread , if I keep this up .
