You probably have access, the rest of us don't!  Is there some reason that you just can't tell us where it will be?

It says Salem,  I don't see how unless we have access to the airport.  The circle there is a beautiful piece of pavement but unless the wind is coming from the exact right direction it will eat your model.  If it's nice the site is awesome....  IF...

The airfield was listed along with the model field under the events section.  The airport has a great little restaurant on site with views of the apron.  Hopefully stunt will be out on the airfield. We would have a much better chance of taking home airplanes when the wind picks up.

Not that It ever gets windy at the regionals.....

Either way I'm thankful to the entire crew that manages to keep this tremendous event going year after year!!!

I'll be there!!!

Flyers who've never visited Flying Lines are in for a treat.  For those who can't see it, here's the message from John Thompson:

OK, go ahead and mark your calendars. It appears that there will be a Regionals in 2014.
All details are tentative, but we have received approval to have the contest at the Salem Airport. The field will use the existing asphalt circle, the existing grass circle, and two asphalt circles on the airport tarmac.
If you are quick with math, you will note that we will have four circles instead of the seven we had at Eugene. That means that all fliers will have to get used to a tighter schedule. This will most likely mean one day for speed, one day for carrier, and less practice space for stunt.
There will be lots of other changes, too, but the good news is: The Regionals is on for a 44th time!
Spread the word and recommend that your friends watch this spot for updates.

Hey Brett , I looked at The Flying Lines Site & it will be in Salem , Or.  A 260 mile drive for me ,  the drive to Roseburg was 370 for me.  I have gone down to Salem many years in June to prep for the winds in Muncie & found it calm . I personally don't dislike it that much I can tell you flying at the Boeing Space Center was worse. I never thought we could use the Airport's runway, hanger area. That would make it pretty good  otherwise the 2 circles we have there would be a squeeze.Quite a few hotels & places to eat  ,less traffic than Eugene , Springfield.

According to the Flying Lines post they'll have access to some tarmac in the airport proper.  John says that they're down to four circles from seven, and warns about less time for practice flights.

The Salem field is about an hour's drive from the Delta Park field, (and my home field in Estacada, but it's remote, not paved, and gets really rough in the wind).  So if it's just practice after a trip that you need you could get a hotel on the north end of Salem and commute to one of those alternate spots and avoid the crush.  If you want practice at the circle you'll be flying on, then unfortunately I don't have a suggestion to offer.

The normal circle at Salem has a pylon socket and often has racing circles painted on the asphalt. This leads me to think that speed and racing events will be held there, leaving the circles on the ramp (not the runway, John!) for stunt (mostly).

I ate in the airport restaurant there after Fall Fallies, and made the trip home without any ER stops.   (PE**) Steve

Great news!  Salem Airport could develop into a very nice venue for the Regionals.  As Steve suggests, I suspect the stunt will take place on the ramp, not the paved circle currently available.  Lots of hotel options within :05 minutes of the site.

I do not agree with the so-called "wind problems" at Salem flying site (airport property).  I've made some awesome flights there, and the wind was never a problem.  So don't be put off by rumors.

Do you any of you know if they would be flying a Nostalgia 30 or Super 70's class?  I assume they would have Classic and Old Time as well as the PAMPA classes.  I am planning on making my first trip up there and need to decide what to work on.  I'd like to build a Nostalgia 30 plane but if they aren't flying that event I'll work on a Classic instead.  What is the typical schedule?  Old Time and Classic on Sat and PAMPA classes on Sunday?  Brightbill, are you going?  :) How is my SR-7 doing?  ;D

Thanks,

Shawn

I'm pretty certain that they had Nostalgia 30 last year. Most NW contests do, flown with Classic, and the trophies often go unclaimed. Haven't heard of any "Soup or 70's" events anywhere 'round here. Do youse guys have the class in California contests?  H^^ Steve

Steve...Thanks for the info.  I am getting back into this but I have not heard of any Nostalgia events in CA but I could be wrong.   I'd just like to see some new designs and not the same old classic airplanes over and over again.   :)

Richard Walbridge and I judged Classis/Nostalgia last year.  I don't remember how many there were, but there were some Nostalgia entries.

I just want to point out that all details regarding the NW Regionals are tentative at this writing in January.  Updated info will be posted on the Flying Lines main website (flyinglines.org) in the Where the Action Is page.  There may also be day-to-day updates on the NW CL forum, which is a message board like this one linked to the FL site.
We are trying to figure out how to hammer the contest down into four circles and still keep all the events; that's why everything is tentative.  Stay tuned for more info.  When we get everything figured out, the flyer will be posted on Flying Lines and mailed as usual.
