My cousin was visiting on Saturday, and I was judging on Sunday so I may have missed one -- but if I'm not mistaken, there were only three scale pilots at the Regionals this past weekend.
I'm gonna build an Ercoupe, because I've always wanted to, and because it'll be a backup event in case my shoulder never comes fully back on line. Maybe I'll have time to get it done for '18, if I can hold back on my ambitions to make it the bestest ever.
There are some really nice, easy to model airplanes out there. If you stick with something that doesn't have flaps or retracts or other gew-gaws you can, theoretically, get full points. If you want to support the event but don't want to build a model you can fly an ARF in Fun Scale (and there are some nice RC ARFs out there to convert). If you don't want to build something nice you can build some crappy scrappy profile and contend for 3rd place.
We need to keep scale going at the Regionals; without it we wouldn't have the fun of watching John Thompson run off his feet all weekend.

Tim, We had more than that! 6 pilots, Three entries for 1/2 A Scale, Three for Fun Scale, 1 for Profile Scale two for Sport Scale .One entrant was supposed to make it but did not,t that would have been 7 pilots.

Dang! I missed it! So, should I stand down from building an Ercoupe, then?

No go for it enter in fun scale.

Westcott,
I dare ya,, but step up,, do it right LOL,, lets see some retracts, multi engine, and something to take advantage of TUT
( no really, do it)

Not the first time around -- no flaps, no retracts, no mechanical options -- just a light, good looking plane that can at least stagger through a wingover or a loop.
Gizmos and gew-gaws later, if I stick with it.

At the 2016 Regionals, I entered a scale plane with no flaps, no engine control, no retracts, wrong colors, and only a passing resemblance to scale. Of course, it scored low. (It was a Tipsy Junior)

I was going to bring my GeeBee carrier ship for fun scale but just ran out of time. Maybe next year.

Probably one of the easiest items to add to a scale model is flaps, if you get an ARF that has flaps drop in 2.4 Ghz controls control the throttle and flaps with the 2.4 controls and you are good to go.
Remember... these items count has options
1) Throttle control
2) Flaps
3) Taxi
4) retracts (counts as two options)
5) Touch and go (counts as two options)
6) Multi-engine
7) High-Flight (45 degree)
If you get an ARF that has 2 or more engines, drop flaps in it and use these as options. There are lots of ARF's available out there that are identified as an RC model that can be converted to CL. If the model weighs less than 20 lbs it can be converted to CL scale. I like to keep the models below 14 lbs otherwise the line tension gets a little high
throttle control
flaps
touch
go
multi-engine
taxi

I'm into total KISS mode here. Throttle and elevator only. I know it's swimming upstream against the "lots of detail" folks, but it appeals to me (and, I'm not going to win the first time out anyway).
The flight options I'm thinking of for the Ercoupe are:
- high flight
- missed approach
- lazy eight
- touch & go
- taxi
So, no need for anything but a car radio and a throttle in the plane, and just a simple clean airframe.
-
replace any of those options you listed (except touch and go) with throttle control and you still have 6 options. The lazy eight is tough to do

Hey Tim! If "Proxy" flying is allowed I just might enter this plane, so somebody else doesn't always have to be in last place. I can't go to the regionals having been banned from there as well as being a member of PAMPA, but Proxy flights might be entered in scale.

No one, to my knowledge, is banned from PAMPA membership and if someone says you are, I will investigate and find out why they think that. I am aware of no bylaw that permits banning or kicking out anyone, and we have previously fought over this tooth and nail to keep it that way.

Thanks. It looks easy on paper, but I can understand that looking easy and being easy can be two different things.
-
I don't know what misunderstanding might have led to this, but to my knowledge nobody officially associated with the Regionals has ever banned anyone -- and certainly not Joe -- from the Regionals. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do this. Joe is a great guy and always welcome.

Neither John Thompson nor Mike Hazel have had anything to do with my problems with not being able to attend the Regionals. The banning was done through a very nasty "death threat" letter that really upset both my self and my wife. My witness to this letter was read by a close fiend of mine from Detroit who read the letter while visiting me and Ginny for our 50th anniversity, eight years ago. The PAMPA ban was developed by an individual who told me that since I was no longer advertising in SN I was not wanted in that group. That came about because of my strong comments about the hatred that was around an election of a PAMPA president. All this was kept from public knowledge until at a very weak moment I brought it up within these threads. I am sorry that I did it, and really can't figure out why I told what I did. Please do not think I hold any umbridge against the meet or those that atten the regionals or any of the hard working people that make this contest one of the est in the nation.

Whoever said that was wrong, they were talking out of their ass, and there is no mechanism for banning anyone for any reason.
I strongly suspect that this was an aspect of a *very unfortunate* and frankly miserable series of events I ended up dealing with as VP.
You aren't banned, and if someone on the PAMPA claims otherwise, they can clarify or ban me, too, because we already fought the "banning" war and there isn't such a thing.

OK! With that said how does this 80 year old Stunt beginner join PAMPA?

I believe Mr. Just has written some articles published in Stunt News. That represents somewhat more effort than most members contribute.
How could PAMPA not welcome Mr. Just? I'm sure they do.

No one is now nor has anyone ever been banned from PAMPA. I suspect I know what happened (which I will not go into) but anyone who has claimed such authority is wrong. No one now, or at any time in the past, has had the authority to either kick someone out or keep someone out.
There have been at least 3 separate attempts by *individuals* to kick someone out of PAMPA and/or off the EC, but none of them were Joe, and in all cases the attempts were summarily rejected.

Because of the work Brett has offered, I have now re-joined PAMPA. Once again Beginners entering Beginner PA here in he NW can rest assured hat they will not ever be at the bottom of the placings.
