Nucleus delta wing
« on: April 28, 2017, 03:30:30 PM »
we´re gonna have a fly on next 6th may here in Brazil, at CASA field, and we will have a Team Race for fun
never been into that, but a friend lured me to participate
after an hour long search through Outerzone came this unknown model called Nucleus, from England.
i liked the wing construction method and printed the plas.
after 3 working afternoons it´s virtually ready for finish
used 100% scrap material!
canopy is form our local legendary Casa Aerobras, and while there found a plastic cowl for the scale model Tucano, wich almost fit perfectly.
after modifications will be used to speed up things!
engine will be enya 25
if anybody ever saw one flying or knows about i would like to know what to expect!

Fred,

You always take on interesting projects.  H^^

Unusual where the lead outs exits the wing? Is this exactly as per the plans?

Vac-forned cowling?

Clean work!

thanks Charles
i try my best to stay away of noblers and ringmasters, as we have plenty on earth! aside the one built for the article, i have seen no other built!
i exits the LE right at the bellcrank, as per the plans, no modification from my side
the cowl was adapted from a scale Tucano C/L kit  and yes, vac formed, but too short, so i had to adapt using fiberglass cloth and epoxy resing inside
regards from Brazil!

Yes, put an extension on the wing tip for the leadouts.  Also don't leave out the out board tip weight and the nose weight.  They inherently come out tail heavy which is a no no.  On launch be ready to move back to keep lines tight like the racing guys do.  It does look interesting.

I'm really intrigued by the construction method. I wonder how large of a span you could go and have it be structurally sound?

it came out really strong and no twist motion at all, maybe a full span stunter, but then it´s very similar to an I-beam concept, wich is rather safe and tested

seems to me this is a proven design as is, i´ve read the article and see no reason for such scary expectations
but thanks for the heads up
if destroyed, it only took me a few evenings of fun and another unnusual plane born and died
after 30+ years building models on a daily basis i´ve learnt to get along crashes, surprisingly less than 5% of the hundreds of c/l, 1/3 scale and r/c jets i was commissioned to build crashed, so it will be ok if i lost this one to mother earth
weel keep posted and made sure to film the maiden, if i get in trouble would bem fun to watch!

Hi Fred,
for a team race design it sure has ginormous flaps!

IF the plane survive the maiden flight! will take plenty pictures before, for posterity
other guys here are using straigh wing trainers for the competition
let´s see how she behaves!

Fred,

You Brazilian Professional, just goes to show you the size of the model doesn't matter.

Ok guys, here´s the full story:
first thanks for the advice here was helpfull on several ocasions!
first launch i have stepped back fearing that she would run to the inside, wich proved to be a big mistake: delta / tricicle is a no no for this, as soon as the caller left her and i stepped back, she tipped over and broke the propeller.
tips damaged but the adrenalyn was hight and we decided to start again and let her go as she pleases: she ran a few meters and i added elevetator as soon as i felt the line tension, she was airborn slow but then speed up very fast indeed!
nose pointed a LOT to the outside, and the flight level was a pitch up attitude. very slow on commands and whenever wing hit her, started to shake like in a verge of a flutter.
i tried a wing over (low) but the recorver proved very hard and almost hit the ground, my impression is that she lost efficiency on the surfaces very fast.
we achieved 93 km/h on a 9x6 propeller and no nitro fuel (this was a competition rule)
the enya 25 started easy and even re-starts with a hot engine where easy.
ok, then the landing was apporaching and i was a bit scary. felling dizzy and anxious the landing was hard, and the plane tipped over due to me pulling the line (again)
i went home, spread another 2" the main LG and lowered the nose gear and returned the other day
now the track on departure was very better and landing close to perfect!
at the competition crossing over the other plane (ringmaster) was kind of a night mare due to the poor handling/response, and when i had the first landing hit the ground so fast that i shaved off the glow plug, we lost precious time changing but we ended up wining this match. unfortunately the other planes where all simple planes and faster than this one, so we ended up on 8th place out of 12
the fun worthed the rush to cut ad build the plane in such short time and we all enjoyed a lot, plus people got crazy with the plane as nobody saw similar stuff here
hope you enjoy and to see someone building more of these unnusual stuff

I like it.   Now you know how it takes off and lands you can work on getting faster.   A little tail weight might help the maneuverability or graft some more area to the elevator.   I'm thinking Fox Stunt 35 speed contender.  Also 8th place isn't bad for first try.   Watch out for him guys. H^^

thanks for the nice comments!
unfortunately for this race, the limit was a 25 engine. all of the other planes are profile fuse and thin airfoiled wings, i think this one make a mark but will rest on a friend´s wall now. for next year i plan to build a conventional race plane, but full fused and well finished!with plenty of testing time ahead!

Fred,

I feel that kindness you have from Brazil. Thank you for that.

However, you have it all over me. Hats off to you.  H^^ H^^

I do my thing, but I gotta tell ya, I don't even have the courage to use an iron on covering that gets painted and cleared, let alone detailed with "Fred gray" pen lines. I don't even have a decal guy.

You have been doing this for years and you are on top of it.

I have some distance to go to catch up.

Wow! your "Nuke" is a rocket, four second laps. I would collapse.

Small quickly built model you did, but plenty of quality and finished with your normal craftsmanship.

So, what have you started that's new?
