Where else but the frozen tundra of Minnesota? It's New Years Day and that means only one thing - well, actually two and those are wall-to-wall college football games on TV and the Minneapolis Piston Poppers' annual Freeze Fly!

Those of us who have become complacent with the global warming phenomena have literally been shocked back into reality this winter. Reality in Minnesota means snow and cold.

Does it look cold enough?

Temperature when I arrived at the field at 11am was a "whopping" single degree above. The wind chill brought the effect down to an invigorating MINUS 16.

It matters not what the ambient temperature is since Jeff Lange and Bob Cheney ensure an unlimited supply of piping hot homemade chili and hot cocoa to go around. L-R Keith Sandberg, Wayne Willey, Jeff Lange, Sina Goudarzi.

The goal is everyone puts up a flight then gets to draw from the raffle prizes. The frigid temps made for cantankerous starts which were typically assisted with a generous shot of starting fluid.

The highlight, of course, is guessing what "creation" Norm Andersen would show up with. Past Freeze Fly's he's wowed us with his flying snow shovels, flying candy canes, flying hockey sticks and last year - a set of flying red flannel long johns. We were a bit amused today when he drove up with this:

Sort of reminded us of that Cox toy of some decades ago. Would it really fly though?

Other flying machines were a bit more suitable for arctic excursions.

Yup same problem on SSW. I think he's posting links and not the pictures themselves.

Yea, if I had my home computer up and running, I could probably seem them with Firefox, but this laptop has IE 7. Sigh...

Well when I clear my cache, history, logout then come back in they are not there. I can, however, right click on one of the placeholder icons and chose "show picture" and it'll come up. If I log into the site they are all there.

This is the same method I've been using for years with no issues. I'm beginning to think it's a Comcast issue since they've redirected all their personal web page information recently and that's where the photos reside.

But not everyone on SSW was unable to see them.

Rigth clicking on "show picture" didn't work, but I was able to see them one at a time by "adding to my favorites" then opening that link. Something to do with the server security I think.

I don't envy anyone doing that! But I really congratulate them for their enthusiasm!

Steve I am taking the liberty of posting your pictures as attachments. That way maybe more people can see them. That type of dedication is entitled to the broadest audience possible.

Well this is just strange. I came into work and fired up their MSIE without logging into the forum and all I got were the placeholders. I was able to right click on the placeholder and select "show picture" and they'd come up. I sent the link to a coworker who just used it to browse into the forum and he saw everything.

Strange indeed
When I first looked at your posting I could not see the pictures. I right clicked and select "show picture" No picture appeared. I then looked at the source and found the picture URLs. I went to each one and saved it for attaching. When I looked at your posting again I right clicked where a picture should have been and looked at properties. When I exited a strange thing happened. All of the pictures were suddenly visible in your posting.

Another tactic which works is if you save the web page as a file locally on your hard drive. Open the file and everything is there.

No No, he didn't SEE Bigfoot, he IS bigfoot! You guys may be dedicated in English, but in my hillbilly language that's spelled n*u*t*s! Thanks for the pictures, I'll stick to building this time of year hear in the frozen tundra of NW Ohio! I don't which I admire the most, your courage or your willingness to show the world you love to fly models.

The plane nose down in the snow, what is the wing made of ? Is it a flat winger? I like the design, is it nosedown because of engine troubles or design problems. I was going to fly on New Years but it was just too too windy. More power to you guys!!!

Ray, that is a foamie, cut with an airfoil, not a flat wing. I suspect its displayed attitude was the result of the pilot becoming so frozen he couldn't move his hand any more.

Being of the more nearly sane country of Oklahoma, and not a native nut--I mean Minnesotan--I was not out there, nor am I ever likely to be. Huddled by the fire, that's where I spend my MN winters. 50 degrees and up, that's the flying weather I look for...

Wind and coldest temps of the winter so far was too much for me. Besides I've never been to the field, still don't know where it is yet.

Worked on this, I have to get it done as I got an Oreintal from santa.

Hmmm? I've never seen a Super Clown with wing spars. We have had several over the years, though, and have one of them again right now, but the GH 23 that came on it is just a bit weak (as a matter of fact, it doesn't seem to have as much power as the GH 19's of the way back era, although it has excellent compression, and starts easily, so doesn't appear to need more break-in time).

The last GH 19 either of us had on a plane was on a Streak, and powered it quite well, I thought at the time. I believe that we used a Fox 25, the original half 19 and half 29 variation, on the last previous Super Clown.

As for the Super Clown it a Brodak kit (not the arf) as far as I know its built as it's suppose to be. But I'm just a young snot.

I don' know alot about these ancient planes.

I had the same thing happen but if you right click on the little red X then click show picture they should come up..

Thanks for the pictures Keith, I tried all that right click and show pictures to no avail. Can't beleive I used to work on one of the biggest computors in the world and can't figure out this home based PC. With this cold I have I used the wind excuse for not going to Topeka to fly.
