Title: Now I'm gun shy about using 2k
Post by: Paul Taylor on October 25, 2017, 07:45:38 AM
Has anyone sprayed 2k out of a rattle can just using a spray mask and lived to tell about it?

I would spray outside and be doing light coats just to seal the acrylic paint.

     Hi Paul:

This stuff may be the same stuff that PPG was selling years ago for painting cars.  It provided a great finish but was deadly.  One had to use a sealed mask with fresh air supplied or death was a real danger. Perhaps some chemists will respond regarding the health risks.  Also, it was used to finish gunstocks due to its bling effect and being a very durable finish.

If in doubt, don't use it with a filter.

                                                                                                  Be well,

Thanks Frank.

Just to add... And I do have a 3M paint mask and new filters coming.

Good morning.
I apologize for my bad English but I hope you understand the same.
All polyurethane paints are catalyzed with isocyanates and yes, the isocyanates contained in the polyurethane catalysts are very harmful.
Proper use, following a few simple rules: using a mask with carbon filters and working in a well-ventilated environment, is enough to put us in the safe from serious disadvantages.
Let's not forget, however, that the main component of the fuel we normally use in our engines (methanol) is carcinogenic toxic, although we continue to fill our tanks and do not care if we bathe our hands with the fuel ....
I believe that in these cases the important thing is to work carefully to minimize the risks.

Regards, Massimo

For whatever its worth, I use the same stuff and spray outdoors.  Just make sure you are upwind of the residual spray if there is a breeze.  I wear a simple mask like the doctors wear In surgery.  Never had any problems respiratory wise.

The effects of isocyanates are not immediate, and even short term exposure can be harmful if precautions are not taken. Imron (spelling) is the paint that got everyone on the band wagon for 2 part catalyzed paints and directions recommended a fresh air supply mask. I think that the main issue with this rattle can stuff is control. With all the newer products on the market that come ready to shoot once mixed with catalyst and in small quantities, I think an air brush with large tips or a touch up gun carefully set will give you the best control on where you put the product, and that will limit over spray. It's hard to put down that mythical "light coat" with rattle cans with out a lot of product going some where you don't want it. You can't control pressure, or amount of product like you can with a double action air brush or touch up gun. As expensive as that stuff is, why let a lot of what you are paying for float off with the breeze? If you have to use two part clears, just put it on the trouble spots like the nose and tank areas where fuel will spill. No need for it on the tail, and it's that much more weight of the finished model,
  Type at you later,

      Hi Dan:

Yes, it was indeed Imron that I was thinking about.  It looked great but it as a very serious health risk.  I wonder if people are still using it on cars.

Also for this reason isocyanates are dangerous, and their effect is cumulative.
Just like the effects of cigarette smoke .....

Yes, in the automotive industry and in all those areas where aesthetics and weather resistance are important, the isocianates are still the owners of the field.

I lost a good friend because he thought he knew more than the professional painters.  I remember myself after painting in my basement with the garage door open I was dumping the cleaning liquids when I looked back in the basement there was a cloud of dope in the air.   I even had a fan that was supposed to pull the air/fumes out.  Now I spray out side when there is little wind or it is a steady wind. There is no such thing as rattle can two part paint like I use as a clear topcoat.  The activator in two part automotive will turn it to jelly in a few hours if left in a closed up touchup gun.  That would be like buying some five minute epoxy in one bottle.  False advertising.

Wrong.

The cans have an activator capsule that you have to engage to release the activator into the paint.  The spraymax cans are a true 2k urethane.  Like all 2k paints, they have a use time window after activation, during which you must complete your work, or you'll have a solid can of hardened paint.

Yes they do

the can has a separate hardener and resin and you mix it by piercing the can from the outside.

Once you start you have to use it all fairly quickly

Just like Guinness stout in a can

I stand corrected.  Guess I should get out of my "space" more. <=
