NOTAMs and CONTROL LINE
« on: April 28, 2017, 02:15:21 PM »
Checked AMA website and e-mailed headquarters .  Can't imagine a scenario where flying a tethered model would be a risk to full scale .
If anyone finds a link that provides an official position related to  this matter , please post it.
AMA or FAA rule.
Thanks

Just read something on AMA site about TFRs. Not sure what that stands for, but control line and free flight permitted with pilot using discretion.

Temporary Flight Restrictions?
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

AMA said officially that CL isn't included in NOTAMS and TFR situations, but their general publicity usually ignores CL, as we might expect. Wouldn't want to confuse the sport R/C fliers and Park Fliers, who generally wouldn't know what "CL" or "FF" means.

I recall flying my F1A at the old Boeing Space Center (North of the west parking lot where CL was flown and near the R/C strip). Was setting up for a series of short practice flights one evening, including a "thermal pole". An R/C guy came over and said "what frequency ya' flyin'?"  To which I replied "Three or four times a week, if the wife will let me". He went away scratching his head. But at least he went away...

That was a long time ago...we lived in N. Seattle, actually just outside the city limits, and would think nothing of driving to Kent after work, for an evening flying session or Strat-O-Bats club meeting. Traffic is so bad here now that nobody would even consider attempting that. Too many cars, and too many folks that don't know what the right foot pedal is for.  R%%%% Steve

Unless you're flying on the beach by the casino at St. Maartens I don't think you need to worry. You'd generally have to be flying controline on airport property at the runway threshold to be a hazard.

For me, it depends on what the TFR is for. If someone high profile like POTUS is in town, and you're fairly close to the nucleus, I would be careful. The threat isn't with the FAA and the legality, but with local PD who are ignorant of NOTAMs, TFRs and FARs, but just know that the prez is in town and are extra cautious.

In this case I would go ahead and fly, but if someone with a badge asked me to stop, it would be best to do so. Waiving a printed copy of the NOTAM probably wouldn't get very far.
