Title: Not sure where to ask this....
Post by: jim gilmore on October 29, 2011, 06:11:23 AM
Are there any mail in contests where you can build a model and have it flown by proxy ?
I've neer been able to compete and might consider it if there is some contest That I can enter buy mailing my model....
Something that is 1/2A sized would be ideal...

There are mail in contests where a particular airplane is flown wherever and the results mailed in.  Black Hawk Models was running one for the Perky speed model.  I think they may have dropped it for lack of interest.  I've seen several in Aeromodeller over the years, mostly free flight.

I think Mike Keville runs a 1/2 A multi engine scale contest that accepts mail-ins.

Go down to the carrier section and read about Joe Just's Postal carrier competition.

Someone used to hold a pretty large contest for mail in Scientific models.  Limited to .049's.  There were quite a few pictures on the forum a while back.  Who remembers the details?  Ok, I did a search and I'm sure it was a Musciano contest with mail-in models encouraged.  They were proxy flown, but I can't find the posting.

Last I heard, Larry Rice decided to keep the Perky race going, after all.

It is an unusual race in that the one whose time is closest to the average wins :)
The reasoning is that the Perky is not really designed for the hottest modern engines. Also, that keeps the contest more accessible to mere mortals.

Frank Carlisle has put on several Musciano contests in Michigan.

Bob,
While CLE Frank is an avid. supporter of this one, I think most of the credit should go to Rich Kacmarsky and the Kalamazoo Smoke Rings for the local Musciano interest.  I also know that Frank has been working with Ray Stone mailing some airplanes back and forth so this is certainly a workable venue and a local Musciano event would be a great place to start.

Thanks John for filling in the details. I knew Frank was involved and would be someone to contact. No slight meant to Rich. Not being involved I did not know who did what.

I think the Musciano contest was originated by the Northern Virginia Control Line (NVCL) club. They used to have Walt Musciano judge the planes for appearance. They also originated the contest rules and requirements.

Since not all folks could make it to VA, another contest sprung up in MI. I believe a third exists in CA. Perhaps there are others. Flying proxy is a good alternative if you can not attend the meets in person.

I think (hope) all use the same rules so someone could enter several contests.

A few years ago, Walt Musciano had to give up attending the meets because of health reasons.

Along the way, Black Hawk Models started supplying replicas of many of the old Scientific kits...with the help and approval of Walt. This was a boon to folks who prefer to build from kits.

If any of this info is not correct, please jump in.  H^^
