Veteran's Day remembrance
« on: November 11, 2016, 08:37:06 AM »
This is the day to remember and to thank all who have served to protect the rights and freedoms of our great nation, as many on this forum have.
To this day I'm saddened by the fact that I wasn't accepted as a volunteer in '65 due to 4-F classification.
In honor of my younger brother, Capt. Dennis P. Caron, U.S. Army (Ret.) who'll be visiting me in a few days, I'd like to share a picture of him.

I got in trouble a year or so ago not understanding another forum member's POV--- and jumping him (on this forum) about (sounded to me)  disrespecting the citizens who DID NOT DIRECTLY SERVE...we got it straightened out, as he was deliberately commenting about: the cowards that ran to Canada ----and I could not agree more

My Great Grandfather served Germany...yep wrong side.... but still his duty..

MY granddad supported WWII from here (Immigrant during WWI) turning the production of his business to war effort (no profit and nearly lost the business).

My Dad was Career Army as was I... but he (I think properly) steered all my 5 siblings to contribute by just being good educated productive citizens

No horn toot...very humbling to be asked...

My wife, a retired Army CSM ( also VFW past commander) and I, a Retired First Sergeant, are asked each year-- on this day-- to speak to local elementary schools ( they do not take the day off, but focus on citizenship, and Lampasas county military heritage)

This county has lost a LOT of citizens to WWI/WWII/Korea/VietNam/ Gulf  XXXXX--- and considering the total population...the stats are not really surprising... We are near Fort Hood (but surprisingly a LOT more Marines and Navy than Army or AF)

That said, this a smallish Christian community, normal problems, but strongly patriotic. The Memorial Day and Veterans Day activities are well attended...

I have been in many parades over the years, and always saddened by the crowd that does not stand or salute OUR Flag.... NOT SO Here!!!... a person standing next to some butt head texting or yammering is very prone to jabbing the neighbor...pointing.... and shaming the person into standing and rendering honors to our nation and flag....as we wave back from the float

I used to dread this day in the big city...but out here, in small town USA..I am reminded all day long that there ARE many good and patriotic citizens still--- and THEY all contribute

My family served, my uncles were all active during WWII , my dad the Korean conflict, my sisters and brothers all served as did I.
I tip my hat to all who did their part peace time or during an active conflict.
It is an honor to have served our country and hope that my efforts, and those of my brothers  who also served will not be lost on the nonsense being perpetrated by the minority of ungratefull
protestors" who cant seem to understand that they own the right to protest because of me, my family and the others who served our military..

be well my veteran brothers, know there are those who aprove and appreciate your service, peacetime or conflict
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Serving in the military was pretty much a family tradition.  My Father served as a Marine pilot in WW2, my uncle (his brother) served as a bomber pilot in the AF, One of my Grandfathers served in WW1 in the Navy.  The other in the Army in WW1.  I and my brothers all served I in the Army my brothers in the AF.  My Wife's family also all served in WW2  Her Father is buried in France as he wall killed during the Normandy invasion as a 1st Lieutenant With the 82nd Airborne Division.  Her Uncle (his brother) was in the Marines during the same conflict.  He survived the war and a couple of years after the war married her mother and became her Dad.  I enlisted in the Army in the early 1960's went to OCS and joined Army Special Forces.   Later went to Vietnam in the 1st SOG.

Over the years I have seen both sides of or population.  Those who cherish and respect our service men and those who truly abhor and openly disrespect any uniform.  I've never understood the latter but then, they're entitled to their opinion also so long as they don't express it too overtly to me!

To all my brothers and all my friends who served and are now serving...I salute you!  Thanks for your service!

I too want to thank all who served and now serve.
Our family has served in the military since the revolutionary war. One Grandfather was career Army. One Grandfather was Secret Service killed in Mexico in 1925. My Father and a couple of Uncles served in WWII. I served in the Air Force 1965-1969. I have a Nephew who is an active duty Marine, one Nephew is an active duty Army recruiter. My Niece is medically retired from the Army.
God Bless the USA and all the military personnel and their families.

Something worth remembering.  Over here, we've all got the red Flanders poppy pinned to our coats (left side - over the heart).

It is, John. I seem to always get this and Memorial Day mixed up because I know what happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month...

In the office I work in, there's always some grumbling because we work Veterans Day. We do so, along with a couple other national holidays but we take those days during the week of Christmas.

I've had to work Veterans Day many times over the years and it never bothers me because, in my family, like many here, a long history of serving our country when needed. At least as far back as WW1, they've gone off to war and those that survived returned and went back to work. There's no days off when you work a coal mine, a farm, or a fishing boat. So, to my, it honors those vets who served when needed, then came home and got on with the work at hand.

God Bless all our veterans and those who have served this nation in time of need.
Best Regards,
Bill
