Just Nostalgic for me
« on: June 22, 2020, 07:00:47 PM »
20 years ago when I re-entered the world of Control Line flying, the first model i built was a Cosmic Wind.  Just wanted to build another one for old times sake.  Simple build but I always just liked the looks of the little model.  Still have so decorating to do but she is coming along.

Hey Mike That plane brings back many memories for me as well It was my first 35 size plane I had a borrowed Enya 35 on it and big 3inch dubro wheels It looked like a beast and to me it looked massive I built it back in the summer of 76 with lots of help from my controlline mentor  I have a Brodak version started and I will paint it like the original. I should finish it up and get it flying this summer as there are no events here in eastern Canada this summer due to the covid Thanks for the memory

I had the Cosmic Wind and thought it the better looking of the Goldberg's three planes/designs. D>K

I too have always loved the Cosmic Wind. Of the three Goldberg model (Buster, Shoestring and Cosmic Wind) I preferred the Wind as it has a low slung wind that allows for a full 4 oz fuel tank to be mounted. Since the other two models have wings located on the engine thrust line there is very little room for a fuel tank between the leading edge and the back of the engine. If you want to use a normal size engine (like a .35) you need to consider the Cosmic Wind.

For years I have heard people say that the Buster and Shoestring have better flight performance and I will admit that based upon my flight scores I tended to agree with that "theory". Like most of the "theories" we all hear from various sources this one was proven to be wrong when at one contest I had an experienced pilot fly my Cosmic Wind. When I saw my Wind performing maneuvers that were crisp, clean and almost rules perfect (far above whatever I had been able to fly) and end up with a score in the mid 500's I was forced by reality to reconsider the "theory". Although I hated to do it I had to admit that the perceived lack of flight performance was really caused by what was holding the handle and not the fault of the model itself. Kind of tough because I thought that I was a fairly decent pilot but "reality" always trumps "theory" in real life! If I needed any other proof all I have to do is recall the last time I watched Joe Gilbert fly a Ringmaster in Expert Stunt and post scores in the 550 range.

Hey Mike, enjoy your Cosmic Wind

Mike, I also had the cosmic wind as my first "big" plane. Mccoy .35 for power. I sold it to a friend back in the 70s. Anyway, I saw the plane again hanging in the rafters of his basement and just couldn't believe it was the same plane, because it looked so much smaller than I remembered it. But back then, compared to all the 1/2a stuff I was flying it was BIG!......gene

Hey Mike, enjoy your Cosmic Wind

I need to give Eric a shout out here.  Actually it was after one of the first conversations that Eric and I had years ago when i was getting back into the hobby, he is the one who actually suggested I start with the Cosmic Wind but it was called the Miss Sarah in his kit line up.  He sent me a Miss Sarah and helped me with the build over the phone and that is why this model has a special place in my heart.  It was the first to get me back in the hobby after a lot of years out of the hobby.  Thank you Eric.   Your help and guidance was invaluable back all those years ago.   For some reason, even today after building full sized stunters,  this little plane is still one of my favorites.

Why number 11?

Randy, no particular reason for the number 11.  I just saw it one day on a model with a similar paint scheme and I just liked the way it looked on the wing.  It has no special significance.  By the way, I finished my Ringmaster Deluxe, I just have to decide on a paint scheme.  I have a white base coat on it but still havent decided what I am going to do on it yet.

Eric,

Was the Cosmic Wind that scored in the mid 500's built from a Carl Goldberg kit or from your kit (which I assume builds a lighter 'Cosmic Wind'?

Very nice, Mike! Coincidentally I recently scratch-built one of these, currently set up with an Enya 25 diesel. Haven’t got round to flying it yet, but it looks like it’ll be good fun.  Steve

Ain't Nostalgia wonderful. ;)

I built a Goldberg Buster on the mid 70's Not the usual Fox 35 for power mine had an Oliver Tiger (2.5cc diesel) but flew great and went through the schedule with ease..

When I returned to the fold about 10 years ago I found the remains of the Buster in the attic and after cutting out all the fuel sodden wood rebuilt it for electric.

Still a great flyer and looks so kewl when looking at it down the lines.  y1

Photo taken in roughly the same position in my moms garden 36 years apart. I don't know what I thought I was doing with that hair in 1975.  LL~

Same Belstaff Motorcycle Jacket as well, Still giving sterling service after all these years. Ya just can't beat a quality product.

I've got a vintage Belstaff riding suit, too! I still use it on occasion. Those things are tough as nails!

Hi Joe Ed;

It was a RSM Miss Sarah (Cosmic Wind). When I received permission to kit the Cosmic Wind from Mrs. Goldberg she requested that I call it by a different name and use a set of plans I produced myself. Since my first grand daughter is named Sarah that was how I named it.

All I need to do now is clearcoat, add the tank and engine and she is done.  She weighs 17.5 ounces at this point

Looking back about 55 years ...

I think the Cosmic Wind is the best flying choice of the Goldberg series - and the ability to easily mount a 4 ounce tank is a bonus.

Really enjoyable build and flyer; I ran about 4 different engines on mine over a span of several years.

I've never had a cosmic wind, but that's right in my wheel house for style. I really like that!
