Annual First to fly tradition
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:36:54 AM »
Well gents we could not fly this morning due to rain and wind. However we did try, went to our field ready to go. So that being done we retired to get coffee and a donut. Sorry that this has happened so just remember that we do get some bad weather here in Stuart, fl.

Just got back from an impromptu fun fly with the Balsa Beavers in Toronto.  6 of us braved the weather and put in a few first flights of the year.  Great fun, but definitely need your sense of humour  13F or -10C!!! Not a lot of snow, just a thin crust of ice on the ground.  Warm batteries, propane torches and quick start usually get the job done.  I love the skis, better than wheels.

Happy New Year,

Got one flight in today. Cold about 15 deg f. , windy 15+ mph and snowing. Only C/L flyer up but a couple elect R/C flyers did go.
It was fun but not something I would do everyday.

We flew in Wichita, today. A flying buddy put 2 flights on his Pathfinder, and I had 2 flights on my Shoestring. Cold AND windy! Definitely not shorts and tee shirt weather, here!

The R/C crowd flew at Lake Afton, where they had heat, a windbreak on the shelter, and food. Some people really know how to start the year.
I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

We were lucky here in the St Louis area, high 30's or low 40's and calm winds. It was warm enough we really didn't need our gloves.

Always the best to fly on new years day...last year was colder

About 15 flyers and numerous spectators of the Vancouver Gas Modellers Club made it out the the local flying field.  Temperature around 7C (45F) and light winds made for one of the nicest New Year's flying days in several years.  Following the flying, many of us headed to a local restaurant for lunch. Great way to start the new year!

Cold here with brisk winds and no snow. Temperature in the teens and wind chill in single digits (f). I suited up in my Carhart bib overall (lined) and my ear flapped Carhart billed hat -- also my Cabela's insulated "Guide" boots and jacket. My left hand was toasty in my trigger fingered Swedish Army mitten but my right hand suffered in a thin Jersey glove. The electric S-1 Ringmaster started at the touch of the button. ONE flight satisfied me and I retreated with my friend Jim Swearingen to a nearby Steak N Shake for a hot chocolate and a burger!!

Great fun though for an octogenarian!!!

A few folks flew at Whittier Narrows.  I did not drink and therefore did not have the required hangover and so did not attend.  Maybe next year.
