Not modeling, but...
« on: June 12, 2016, 11:02:09 AM »

Seem that there was a topic on shaving some time back and I can't find it, so here goes.

I like my Gillett fusion razor , but the refills are so blasted expensive, have y'all found something that works as well but less expensive??

There has gotta be something less expensive, that shaves as well too,  so let me know... HB~> HB~> HB~>

Older thread over on BOTR on shaving

can't help on the blades or recommendations...retired I rarely shave unless we are going out or having folks over so I trim and suffer through a terrible electric shaver

I still use the old Gillette "Good News"  Cheap and work great for me.  I get about a weeks worth of shaves from each one.  Come in a bag of twelve for about 9 bucks.

Try "harry's"
Make sure you read the fine print
You can get a starter set for $15
use code "jdb" for free shipping

After my original double edge razor fell apart using it from the time I was a teenager, I tried the new stuff and didn't like them.   PCH(Publishers Clearing House) had a double edge razor listed one month.  Got it and been happy ever since.  Also blades are cheap on the bay. H^^

A while back, someone gave me about a dozen packets of the good old-fashioned carbon steel double-edged razor blades - the ones we used to snap in half to cut the ribs and formers from the printwood when we were kids.  One day, finding the old Gillette razor I'd started shaving with in 1961, I stuck one of those carbon blades in it and had a try at removing a day's growth of bristles.  Just out of curiosity, naturally.

Oh, my.  Hacking away at the bristles was bad enough, but when I sloshed on the after-shave I thought my face was on fire.  What's more, it still felt like a wire brush.  Carbon steel razor blades cut thin balsa and trim off excess tissue as well as anything you can find, but human facial hair... forget it.  It's back to my Wilkinson Quattro from now on.
You want to make 'em nice, else you get mad lookin' at 'em!

When I used up my last Fusion refills, I threw the Fusion razor in the trash and went back to my Gillette "Sensor". I'd kept it and used it to shave under my lower lip, for which the Fusion was totally unsuitable. I shave about every 3 days or whenever it seems desirable to look civilized, or if I'm going to put on sunscreen for some outdoor activity, like fishing or model flying.  #^ Steve

Most of the time I use my Norelco that needs the blades replaced every few years. But about every 4th or 5th shave I use the Fusion. The Fusion always gets those whiskers that the Norelco misses. The cool thing about our white whiskers is that they do not show up like the black ones we use to have. When I was younger if we were going to go anywhere after supper I had to shave again or look like a hobo. Now the hobo look is in style and a couple of days growth of beard is cool. Go figure.

I went through this a few years ago.  Everything with more than 2 blades leaves me irritated and razor burnt.  The $20+ for 3 cartridges was killing me too.  I started here
http://www.badgerandblade.com/
be careful, they encourage you to try everything.  I just about did.  Straights, DE, I have a couple SE too.

My favorite vendors
http://shoeboxshaveshop.com/
unless you want straights, or natural handles, or coticule hones this place photograph everything
http://thesuperiorshave.com/
If you are starting in straight razors check out the sight unseen deals here
http://www.whippeddog.com/

I can get away with shaving every few days.  My wife prefers me NOT shaved, but I am not allowed to grow a big beard...  Go figure.

My typical shave is
http://shoeboxshaveshop.com/omega-50068-quotbambin50068.html (this is my travel brush, fits in a small medicine bottle, I have been frequently shaving at the Y lately)
or a large badger in a handle I turned on my lathe.  The knot is a large "finest" in "fan" shape from
http://www.thegoldennib.com/
(I also like their Super badger.  I made brush handles as a Christmas gift for all the men in my family and used these knots in finest and super)

I typically use Arko shave stick, which is pretty intense when fresh so don't be afraid to air a fresh stick in the garage for a couple months.
I also really like CADE soap from L'Occitane.

The Merkur 1904 in Open comb is my preferred razor.
http://shoeboxshaveshop.com/merkur-1904.html

with Personna "medical" blades (From ebay for about $20/100 blades) or Personna "red", or generic "made in USA" blades from the grocery store (about $5/5 blades) or Wilkenson Sword (Walmart, $5/5 blades)

I do recommend using a brush.  It is worth the effort, even if you are just using canned creams.  The brush lifts the beard and makes shaving easier.

The last time I shaved was before a trip to Tuscon for VSC.  The late Rusty Brown was the only one of a few that knew who I was.   Every couple of months I do take clippers to the beard and cut what little hair there is off.

Thanks Gil for put'n that out here! Every time I go to get blades for my fancy Gillette they are out! I have not been able to get replacement blades in over 2 years. I'm sure I could keep going from store to store till I found some, but who wants to do that! I usually  get something else. Thank you other guys for the websites too!
