I gotta say, I just don't get the point.  If you want to fly a helicopter, build a helicopter.  But, to each his own I guess.

It is a carrier flyer - what better way to do slow laps than stay stationary ?

He's also moving backwards which is a violation for carrier. Pretty nice looking Hellcat though and it looks like he might be having fun.

Having fun is the main.  If he was in a contest he would have been DQ'd as soon as he went backwards.  Exceeding 60 degrees is a foul as well as momentary stoppage.  But, did not see a deck and I hope he has a lot of fun.  DOC Holliday

Back when profile carrier was a new event I built this plane. The wing was a shortened combat wing. The horizontal stabilizer and elevator were way oversize. It won me quite  a few trophies. It would fly like the one in the video. The flaps came down at low speed. I don't think it would have made any difference because it pretty much hung on the prop for the slow speed run. Top speed was just so so. I don't recall any angle rule at the time and I never flew it backwards even though I could. Power was a SuperTigre 35 RC engine.

Carrier flyers often practice this way.  At least I used to.  It's good practice for throttle control and attitude control.  When actually flying in competition there certainly is a max angle rule (60 Degrees) and stopped motion  is a foul.  Backing up is DQ.  However it's good to practice this way to better train the reflexes that allow one not to violate those rules.
Last but not least as mentioned above it's great fun and it's not as easy as it looks.  The fellow in the video is very good at it and is likely a good carrier flyer.
