Any news on the Northwest Regionals that I didn't get to attend?

Hi Randy,

Well, you missed a really wet and soggy Regionals. It rained Thursday through Sunday morning. There was some clearing spells, I didn't fly myself, but was there for the majority of it. I think most of the events finished, in spite of the rain and wind. Today's Stunt events went fairly well, a couple of ground huggers, but all in all it looked pretty good. Some people had fabulous air and others didn't. I think PW won with David second and the rest followed, a ways back too I might add. It was one of the wettest Regionals I've ever seen in the 27 or so years I've been going.

Well, Paul always was a great wind guy. Guy could fly a 500 point pattern during a hurricane ... probably while standing on his head. I guess missing it wasn't as big a tragedy as I thought. Oh well, there's always next year.

I drove the 450 miles up there for the first time this year. The weather was crappy but it was just good enough to allow some flying. It was a well run contest and I'll attend again.
My personal performance was not so good both in Classic on Sat and Advanced today. Engine/prop issues, overruns, and wind all got the better of me. I became a little disgusted with myself and headed for home at about 2 pm.

Sorry I missed you. The weather at this contest is variable. It can be very good or very bad. A lot of times it's, ah, mixed.

Several electric stunters at N.W.R. All performed very well!

Certainly an advantage over glo. My own motor lost part of the exhaust pipe during first official. Dropped parts, so no score. Engine could not be repaired in time.

Next year, ELECTRIC!

Were you flying the same Hurricane (?) that you had at the Fireball's spring contest? Weren't the problems then also from the exhaust misbehaving?

Tim. Same Hurricane. RO-JETT 61. The output end of the muffler is too short to attach an extension to reach outside the fuselage. So final "fix" uses alum tubing with a 4-40 bolt and some JB Weld for insurance. If that doesn't work, I'll get Dub Jett to make a new muffler with an extension WELDED in place!

Floyd: I'm glad to hear you got that fixed. The covering on the wing looked pretty grim -- how did you get it tightened up again?

I've got an aluminum soldering kit that I haven't tried yet -- something like that ought to work as good as welding if you can get some overlap on the seams. You should be able to waltz into any real welding supply place and find some.

As the ED for STUNT I couldn't be more pleased. Friday and Saturday was wet. IT'S OREGYN NOT the worst!!! by no means. SUNDAY was STUNT HEAVEN!!!! Overcast with less then 5 MPH winds. Unless your Brett Buck. Brett's MOJO was hit by changing winds and bumps. Mike Haverly lost he's NEW E-Stunter to an AREA 51 sighting!!

I'll post more on my thoughts soon. ONE of the best contest I"VE been part of!

We call that the "rub of the green", I suspect I will live. And you can't say I didn't get at least a bit of a break on Saturday.

This was my second NWR; so I'm no gauge of "standard" weather; but it rained and the wind blew much more that last year . . . when I wore shorts and sunscreen. I flew first in the second round (intermediate), just as a squall came through. I fought it as best I could, but bounced the landing pretty bad. As soon as my bouncing stopped, they they called it off . . . of course. Wound up with a decent score (420), but I think there were a few sympathy points tossed in.

It's a 640 mile drive, but I'll be back next year for sure. The contest is run very well, and it's a great facility to fly at. Kudos to all those volunteers that worked so hard!

I went to my first Regionals in 1982 (Pat Johnston drug me to it). And I've tried to make is as often as possible since. I've seen a few Regionals that has really nice weather. Sunny, warm and gorgeous. A few that saw pounding rain for the entire weekend with howling winds and were pretty much complete washouts. But the majority usually see some wind, some rain (not much and passing) and moderate temps. It's one of the more fun contests around. Sorry I was unable to attend this year.

While I don't plan to borrow the Ruffy for the TT, it flies reasonably well in the sort of conditions we had this weekend. But even at 60 degrees and sea level, it definitely got tired towards the end of the square 8, etc. That low aspect ratio just sucks the power out of it.

Of classic planes I have flown, Ted's Chizler (which is just another Nobler clone) flew the best. Ted says I beat him with that back in about 99, but that's not how I recall it. Ted flew one of the best stunt flights I have ever seen, regardless of which airplane it was, with the Chizler at one of the Roseburg regionals.

Don't be so modest. The $10 referred to in an earlier post came to light on Saturday morning as on the trip up from California, Ted wagered Brett a crisp $10 that he couldn't be beaten in Classic with both using Ted's Ruffy. Brett would of course have to forgo appearance points but could easly win due to his superior flying skills. Ted figured that this was trap that Brett couldn't resist and also figured it was a sure thing. Ted was all smiles after the first round but Brett's "Rub of the Green" air in the second round was impossible for Ted to overcome. Of course Ted took it like a gentleman and as you can see by the picture below he was happy to part with a new, crisp $10.
