Norhwest Skyraiders Stunt Judge clinic

   For those interested, the Northwest Skyraiders club is hosting a Stunt Judge clinic.  Bruce Hunt, a many time NATS judge will be the instructor.  There will be two circles set up, one for practice and one for the clinic itself. According to Bruce, the emphasis will be on what to look for in a pattern, rather than rules interpretation.  No doubt the rules will have to be discussed, but not literal interpretation of same.

    I have attached a PDF that can be downloaded and printed.  It would be a good idea to have a copy if for no other reason than to ask intelligent questions.

    The Flying Lines website  http://flyinglines.org/ has information, including my email address.  Entry into the airport is made through a secured gate on the south end of the airport.  We will try to keep it open as long as possible.  Email me or make contact through a Stunthangar.com  PM for my cell phone number in case the gate is locked.

    We will need flights to be critiqued, so feel free to bring a plane.  The weather looks like it should be good.
 
Here is the information from Flying Lines.

   "Auburn Airport, Auburn, Wash., 9 a.m. to ???. Participants should bring a printed copy of the 2015 AMA Precision Aerobatics rules, a chair, a pen and a calculator."

   Please attend and at least have fun flying!  For participating pilots AMA or MAAC membership is mandatory.

I'm planning on it.  Robin is planning on coming out, too, and seeing if she can judge circles & straight lines when there's no horses involved.

Here's a picture from the event.  It's a bunch of people gathered around Mike Haverly's Sultan before he makes his first flight, probably thinking "given the wind, this may be our last chance to see this thing in one piece!"

Steve,
I happen to know that you guys were judging your own appearance.  I was off to the side with Bruce and we were doing likewise and gave the 4 of you a total of 12 appearance points.  You had top score with 5 due to your hat, Chris and Mark had 3 each and well the rest went to Varley.  Of course on the way home we had to listen to Keith extoll the virtues of English beer.  Maybe you'd like to add to Chris and my comments, negative as they were.  All kidding aside, we had a good time and appreciate Bruce's incite on stunt judging.

I was waiting for Bruce to ask if anybody had a warm coat! I had a spare. Was thinking about using it, too. ALWAYS bring Polar Fleece to any outdoor activity in the NW, regardless of the month or weather forecast.  y1 Steve

PS: Mike's plane is not a Sultan. It looks a bit like a Sultan, but the wing is a stretched Randy Smith "Shrike" wing. The result, Mike calls "The Fifth Element" after the book & movie. Or, "Boron", if you listen to me (5th Element on the Periodic Table).

A big thanks goes to Bruce for presenting a well planned class on his insight to PA judging.  There is a lot of information to be considered and he was able to break it down into components that were much easier to understand. 

For those that have not seen the movie, Leeloo is The Fifth Element, not Boron.  According to the story, she is the perfect being with all the secrets of the Universe and sent here to save the Earth from annihilation by a "Death Star" bent on our destruction.  Of course she has all of the martial skills and kicks everyone's butt.  It is science fiction, humorous and not to be taken seriously.
 
From the image you can see where I got the colors for my airplane.  Norm Whittle is the designer of the Sultan and I used his basic "look" and added a thicker wing, with less sweep on the leading edge.  Square inches are about the same @690.

I should have my head examined for trying to fly this airplane in these conditions.  I had made some fairly large trim adjustments in better air and then changed props.  Bad idea.  I just about got pulled over on my lips on outside bottoms!  No complaints, it will get better.  The wind was not un-flyable, just bumpy.  No harm, no foul.  You'd think I'd learn by now.  I lost a perfectly good Chizler at GSC a couple of years ago doing the same dumb thing.

Leeloo's hair should cost her a couple appearance points. 

Wind wasn't bad when I flew, but my plane wasn't in trim, either.  I had a sore elbow, and squares with too much tip weight were painful.  Sunday's practice was much better, thanks to tip weight removal, wind reduction, and Naproxen. 

It was fun and useful to get critiques from so many judges.  I had a lot to work on the next day.
