Title: Non-CL. "Flying the Boeing 787"
Post by: Hoss Cain on December 18, 2012, 08:33:33 AM
Ly and I flew CL way back in the late '50s, early '60s, both members of the 2nd Bomb Wing, B-47 Strato Jet.

Ly sent this to me. The long link worked for me. Any aviation interested person should enjoy. Just glad I never had to fly a Robot.

Very intersting to see the landings with one engine on idle. Also how the plane will not let you over stress the wing.

I retired from the flight controls group before the 787 was finished, so I missed out on much of this stuff except questioning the value of a HUD.  Boeing philosophy was (and I presume still is) not to have the automatic stuff overrule the pilot.  I presume the maneuver load alleviation still lets him maneuver as hard as he wants, but makes the g loading at which he hurts the airplane higher than it would have been with the lift distribution set for best gas mileage.  You don't care that much about gas mileage when you're trying to avoid a mountain.

Matt,
By the time you"grow up" there will be something else even "cooler".

Like a 797 but with a blended wing/body concept Boeing has been working on in much smaller scale  ;D

Had my doubts.  At least I can dream though!

Have you taken dynamics yet?

Physics I is next semester. Aerodynamics and "technical" stuff won't start until next year

Just plain old dynamics.  When you get there, calculate the accelerations on a passenger aways out the wing during a turn entry.

You guys with all the smarts, answer this.   Who is going the fastest, the attendant moving down the aisle or up the aisle while airborne?

Anyway, Matt keep hitting those books.  As I know you will be top of your class.

Yeah,
Like the DC Cruiser I'm supposed to be flying now. Oh, that's right. I'm still flying the MD-80!

Half of them go one way, the other half the opposite way, so it all evens out, right?

Do you prefer positive G's or negative G's?
