Is anyone contemplating building a Nobler in the near future that would like to incorporate some parts built by my dad? Some have been removed from previous flying models and some are parts that have never been airborne. I'm not sure what previous models they were removed from but I do know they are not off the WC plane. I'll probably never use them and I hate to see them go to waste.

Hi Joe, what a gracious offer.
I’m currently building your dads model and should be ready for paint soon.
I do not need any parts, but I am curious about his colors, as I want to replicate your dads plane
as authenticity as I can.
Do you happen to have any of the red he used as a sample?

It was a very deep "Candy Apple" red. It may have been AeroGloss "Stearman Red". The build on restoring the WC plane in the pictures is very close to the original color. The pictures are not distorted and the plane has not faded much. Most of the pictures I see distort the color, mostly lighter. It has been a long time and I can only comment on the years I flew with him '75-'81. I think he used a lighter red on the Bear. There are still a few of them showing up around here and they do appear a lighter red. There are quite a few pictures on the Memorial thread. The darker red ones are very close.

I do know that the red he used was very difficult to cover flaws with. Perhaps that is why he had so few! Aerogloss red is that way.

Perhaps one of the Moon brothers might know the exact answer.

Good info here. Since Aero Gloss is no longer available, I’m wondering how close Brodak Miss Ashley red is to the old Aero Gloss Stearman red.
Any thoughts here?

I believe the Ashley Red is what we used on the plane that is being refinished. It seemed to be the closest we could find without custom mixing. After it is clear coated it should be very close.

Not sure this helps but this is Aerogloss Stearman red. I do have some left if you would like to try to have it matched. When I rebuilt this plane I used sig Fokker red. It was very close.Fokker throws off a little blue hue. Stearman red is a nice red.

IF the color was the same as the plane Bob took to the VSC (the one in the Mike Keville painting) there is a monokote that is virtually the same. Bob's tip weight box had failed and all the lead bird shot in it "shot" through the jap tissue on the bottom of he wing. He took the plane to Mike's Hobby Shop (long gone) and matched a monokote color with Bill Bischoff's assistance. He took the roll home, returned later and asked Bill how to use this stuff. Bill explained he should remove the clear backing before applying it.

The lower wing panel was monokoted and very few ever knew the difference.

I'm sure Billy B will clear this up....maybe

Apparently I don't remember this as well as Dale does, but if anything, I'd guess it was Monokote "true red". FWIW, I'd always heard that Bob's signature color was Sig Tennessee red.

Larry, I wonder if Joe might have a chip of paint from which you might be able to get a color matching done by anyone still making "dope" based paints? Or you could just ask if anyone still has any of the Gieseke Red Monokote they'd be honored to share with the master.

No it was Stearman red. I probably have enough of it in my lungs to give a sample someday.
I clearly remember the day he almost burned the house down as he heated the paint prior to spraying.

I used to use a lot of Stearman red many years ago. AG Fokker was a lot darker. Stearman had a hint of orange to it. I mix colors all the time and think that adding a little yellow to some Miss Ashley red would yield what you want.
