Title: Nobler First Flights
Post by: Greg L Bahrman on September 24, 2006, 10:33:08 PM
Need to wrap leadouts and make new landing gear. Tom Morris controls, 4 inch bellcrank, Tom Muggleton 40 fp. Adjustable leadouts, hollowed wing tips, laminated flaps (Carbon Mat and balsa), tip weight box, Monokote. I weighed it at 40 oz. But I think 42 oz. will be more realistic when it's finished. I will post new picture with weight when done.

Is it a kit, or a recovered ARF? I like the colors!

Monokote....First all kote for U/C I've done. Trim is done. It was kinda fun. But I still hate hinge pockets, trys a mans patience. Still working on gear. The one shown is just a piece of scrap to hold plane up while I work on it. The gear has been sent to Scott Riese to add some lightening holes and get a polish job along with the mufflers. Prop was put on for show and tell It's a BY & O. I don't think I'll use it to fly. It's an ARF that a friend started, he gave up and I took it over and finished it. I stripped all the original covering and re-did it. Added Tom Morris controls, 4 inch bellcrank, Muggleton OS 40 FP, cut wing tips off and added hollowed blocks with adjustable leadouts. I don't have anything to fly at this time so I thought I'd give this a try. Some of them seem to do a half way decent job thru the patttern. Made new laminated flaps and added a little extra area to the outboard wing flap. All for fun.

Looks a lot better than mine ever did.  Now contact Glen Lee and get some wheels that match the color.  DOC Holliday

Finally done. Came out a little heavier than I thought. Isn't that always the way. It's ready to fly at 43 oz. (dry). Scott Dinger Hy-Flow Muffler 3/4 oz. I still have to add tip weight too. Polished components  done by Scott Riese. I sent him rough junk and he returned jewelry. Looks even better in person. Thanks Scott. How does this compare to all the other Noblers out there weight wise ? (ARF, ARF).

Hi Greg, your Nobler looks really cool. I hope it trims out well for you.
Makes me want to start on mine now but alas I've already got too many
 "irons in the fire" **)
Cheers, Rob.

Hi Greg, I meant to mention before that the Tom Muggleton FP .40 should be AWESOME
in this aircraft.  ;D ;D ;D
I saw one in a profile Sukhoi (Mark Batty's) win the Aussie Nats 2 years in a row!
It was really strong, ran in a constant 4 stroke and never missed a beat.
If you haven't flown with this engine before I think you will be really "pumped" at the results. n~ n~ n~
 Cheers, Rob.

Went to the field this morning and layed out my lines etc. all set to go. Before I take my plane out to the circle I want to make sure everything is ready, so I'll just start her up for a couple of quick blasts just to get things warmed up. No matter what I do it won't start. Now I got Scott Dinger (the muffler man) helping me and also Rudy. Changed the plug 3 times tried different batteries, opened the needle, closed the needle.  I'm so tired and my arm is starting to ache from flipping so much. I finally made the decision to remove the motor and put the backup motor in. I removed the muffler and handed it to Rudy who says you dumb $hit. I know why it won't run.

Well now I recall exactly how this happened (no excuse). I was making these really cool copper gaskets when the wife pulls in the garage and says, "I know your busy so I stopped and got dinner on my way home from work, lets eat. I said just a second let me see if the screws will go thru this gasket, I'll just bolt it up and come back after dinner and finish it. (NOT).....Stupid is as stupid does

I ended up putting two flights in with the LA 46 using the Zinger Pro 11 x 4 prop. It actually flies better than I thought it would. Still needs some trimming but it seems to be in the ballpark or should I say saveable. The main problem is that with the LA 46 and a .295 dia. venturi, I ran out of fuel at 4 1/2 to 5 minutes or sooner. Not enough fuel to do a complete pattern. It has a 4 oz. tank and as most of you know even that had to be slid in with a big hammer and there is no more room for a larger tank. It also seems to be a little on the nose heavy side as the corners are way late and not sharp. Moved the handle spacing from 3 in. to 3 3/4 in. and made a big difference in the corner but still not quick enough. Controls are smooth and there is plenty of travel. So I removed the LA 46 and replaced it with the Muggleton OS 40 FP. It has enough power to do the job on just 3 1/2 ounces, anyway thats what Scott Dingers Nobler is doing with the same setup. The other benefit is that the OS 40 FP is about 1 1/2 ounces lighter than the LA 46. So maybe I'll get the corner I'm looking for eventually. I didn't get a chance to try it with the OS yet, but maybe tomorrow. I'm going to take it to the contest tomorrow and put in a couple of practice flights before sign-up....Well we'll see ?.

I think we have all been there and done that.  I think you will be very happy with the Nobler.  May have to build me a sixth one.  I discovered that not only do have five different sets of plans for it, but, there is a Gieske Nobler and a Green Box kit in the dungeon.   DOC Holliday
