Nice New Stunt Plane
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:10:05 PM »
Hi Guys,

I saw a nice new plane at the field last week.  Anyone want to guess who's it is.  I have a few more pictures if anyone would like to see more.

Does the builder have a Stuntwagon and Humongous with a somewhat similar paint scheme? Like maybe Tom Luper?

I really  dunno whose it is, but I'll guess Roy Trantham, thanks to the hints. It looks like a Legacy that had a weekend fling with a Chief. I like it!  #^ Steve

Here are a few more pictures.  I bet someone will get the owner now.  This is a very nice flying plane.  Someone said it looked like a Chief.  It was designed to be a cross between a Veco Chief and a PT-19.  Enjoy.

Hi Doc,

Yea, it's Tom Luper.  Tom and I are not real fast since we designed this plane in 2005.  Tom has been flying his for a few weeks now and I'm just getting ready to start building mine.  Tom did a great job on the plane and it has a nice weathered look to it.  Here are a few spec on the plane.

1.  Deisgned in AutoCAD and the parts were laser cut.  Nice fit all around.
2.  Used Tom Morris Wing Jig with Tom Morris Bellcrank and controls.
3.  55" Span - 625 sq inch wing area - 56.5 oz ready to fly less fuel
4.  Fuselage and wood parts glassed - Poly Span Covering on Wing - Brodak Paint - Automotive Clear Coat
4.  Double Star 60 Lite Engine - 6 oz fuel tank - 12 x 6 Prop
5.  63 Ft lines and about 5.1 - 5.2 Lap Times
6.  Name of Plane - Navy Scout

Tom says it flys great and it look very nice in the air.  Thanks for all the positive comments.

Wow, beautiful airplane. I like the paint scheme/job the best. Nice weathering, dirt streaks, chipped paint, panel lines... very cool. Especially nice shading of the pilots.

Happy flying

Hi Steve,

Since Tom just put the 60Th flight on it yesterday and was headed back out this morning, I think he really wants to fly it at Huntersville in October.

The plane flew pretty good on its first flight but the controls were to quick to suit Tom.  Some of this was due to needing a little extra nose weight. He adjusted his handle and added about .6 oz of weight to the nose.  We are going to shorten the tail moment 1/2" and lengthen the nose 1/2" to correct this on the plans and the next plane.

The Double Star 60 Lite has proved to be a very good engine for this plane and Tom now has it running just like it wants it.  He had to work with the muffler and adjust the back pressure to get steady runs.  Says it is there now, so all that's needed is lots of practice.

I had a lot of trouble finding published weight data on the Double Star 60 Lite engine, so for any one who needs it, here it is.

308.0 g = 10.86 oz Engine with no Muffler
350.0 g = 12.35 oz Engine with Supplied Tube Muffler
325.5 g = 11.48 oz Engine with Supplied Tongue Muffler

See you in Huntersville.

Crud! he's out there flying today??!!  We're doomed.......

I need to get up with Tommy and talk to him about the latest setup he's running.  I changed my DS 60 setup alot in the past few weeks and I think I have it running pretty good now.  Thats after 625 flights on the old setup....which was shamelessly copied by me from Tommy's original DS setup from about 6 years ago.

Might there be some plans floating around by Huntersville? #^

Hi Steve,

Give Tommy a call, I'm sure he will be happy to talk with you.  We just bought two new DS 60's and Tommy said I could have my pick.  Told him it didn't matter to me, since he would have to make it run like his anyway.

I have full AutoCAD Plans for the plane which I did.  We needed these to get the parts laser cut.  For the time being, they are just for Tommy and I.  I will be glad to bring them to Huntersville and show them to you.  It really is a nice design.  If I can figure out how to convert the plans to a .jpg, I will try to post them here later in the week.
