Nice Fly Day at the PC Flyers Field
« on: January 11, 2010, 06:37:33 PM »
Hi guys,
We had a nice group out to play with us yesterday. Brian Massey took this picture of us. It was really cold, had to wear a jacket. Had a nice breeze, maybe three miles per hour, sun off and on. Roger flew his electric pathfinder and it seems to be working out very well. Ronnie flew his strega using his new thunder tigre four stroke and its showing a lot of promise. Brian flew a very nice pattern with his Trophy Trainer using a OS46LA. Norm Gayer flew his Tutor using a magnum 53 for power. Rich Walbridge flew his strega using, I believe a PA on pipe. Mr. Walter Hicks did a great job flying his Giles with the great RoJett 67. Fred flew his Imitation using a piped engine. Our president came bye but he didn't fly, just came bye to chit chat. We all had fun and yes everyone took their toy home in one piece. I'm sorry for all you guys that have to stay indoors and watch videos of the rest of us out playing, ha ha . Feel for ya just can't reach ya, Gary (We're located in the great Fresno, CA)

Hi Paul,
We're located in the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno, California. We're a bunch of wimps, if the temp is below 40 degrees, we'll freeze to death and if the wind is over five miles an hour, we can't fly. Some say we're spoiled a$$ Brats but we love the weather and being able to fly year round. HEY!!!! thats why we retired, RIGHT!!!!

Gary, what is this "retired" thing of which you speak? We know of no such concept in this realm.

I look forward to seeing your E-Pathfinder, maybe at Gilroy or at Woodland once the season heats up. With luck and perserverance my E-China Clipper will be flying this spring.

We had pretty similar but a little warmer weather in Alameda, mabybe upper 40's low 50s, on Sunday. Very busy as always, two hours to get in two flights. We have 120V at the field to keep the coffee pot and battery chargers going.

Stick close to Rich W and you will learn a great deal about finishing and flying. Plus he's a nice guy.

Hi Paul,

You probably wouldn't want to retire. I only get three checks a month, one from social security, one from one retirement fund and another check from a different retirement fund. Most can't handle retirement, ya have to stay home and work on your toys, yes I have to go fly several times a week. To keep active I play with my computer. Its really hard when I wake up early, look outside, don't like the weather so I go back to bed. One thing if you're married you still have a boss, tried to get her to fire me several times!!!! Being as I retired she retired also, the only difference is I got a different boss that doesn't pay me a darn penny, in fact if I don't do the job correctly I get to redo it. Don't tell anyone cause I'm hiding out in my little 10'x12' shed, with me computer going, coffee pot, shoes off. Its just to hard a life being a old boy.  HEY!!!!! you'll keep working so my social security check keeps a coming, you'll hear now????? Gary

Hey Gary don't try to hard on getting fired by the permanent boss.   It can get expensive.  We finally got to double digit temps.  Yesterday and today almost hit 50 degrees F.  I don't envy the California guys too much.  At least we get a building season. LL~ LL~

Hi Doc,

Its hard cause we don't get that build season, we just have to keep flying. If you would like you can get them build and send them to me, so you don't run out of room. Our club seems to have a crash record, so we could use some more planes. (Yes, send plane complete ready to fly, include fuel) Ha Ha. Well!!! I have to sign off, time to go flying!!! DARN????
P.S. Thanks for your reply and let me know when ya going to send all them planes, Ha Ha Gary

Hi guys,

I had a great day at the field, I believe it turned out to be about 70 degrees. I was really happy with Mr. Skylark, did a little trim work on her and man she can fly a very nice pattern. She might be old but none of the new babies can beat her. I sealed up the hinge lines, flying on 63' lines, 10/20 fuel. Like Randy says!!! WHAT A RIDE!!! I removed the ST46 and placed it with the OS40FP. The Tigre is to much engine for that plane. The OS only uses 3 ounces of fuel to do the pattern. I ended up using a APC 10/7 Prop, lap time was around 4.9 seconds, good pull, just a great time. WISH YA ALL COULD HAVE BEEN THERE!!!!!!!

Yes, it is nice to fly in December/January in bright blue skies and on green grass. But unlike what Gary tells you, all is not bliss . . . Here's Gary giving proof;

Hi Brian,
I still haven't figured out why that Leo Engine quit inverted. I guess I'll have to put the K&B 40 back on that plane and get her going again. Thats a fun plane to fly, has more hanger rash than anything. I was lucky I didn't break anything when I landed her. Alright just call me Harry, go get another one Gary.  HEY!!!! hurry up and get some extra plane build so we'll have a supply, Gary

"PC" stands for "People's Church". We flew at their site on the Friday before the Golden State Stunt Champs in '08. I haven't figured out if the church came before the flying club or the other way 'round, but they usually allow flying there after 2pm on Sunday, so I might be able to cope.

Mike Haverly and I went flying today (Jan. 16) at "The Mattress Factory" (TMF), in Sumner, Washington, SE of Seattle. It started out foggy, but ended up with light sprinkles of whatever that wet stuff is that falls from the sky. Mike flew his newly repaired JD Falcon (crashed at the PC's site on that fateful Friday)...it looks the same, and he already likes it more than either of the Freedom 45's that he flew at VSC the last two years. Next, he flew the Shrike flown at Clovis '08, but with a RO-Jett .65/pipe replacing the PA .40/pipe. I just stooged around.  LL~ Steve

Thanks Steve. I was sure hoping that it didn't mean "politically correct"!! But, you never know these daze... H^^
We have a Pentecostal church right across from our subdivision that has granted permission to fly there, but could use a few loads of dirt for filling a nice runway(nice and bumpy!). It's also a day care, so the fly times would be limited for us..sighh

Steve, you're right, PC does stand for Peoples Church. Harry Plunkett, one of our club members and current president, is very involved with the church and thanks to his efforts we got permission to fly on the grounds. The Fresno area is impossible to find a place to fly, so we really appreciate the Church's courtesy. The ground keepers even burn our circle in the grass for us, how's that for nice!

We plan on hosting the Friday practice for the Golden State Championships again this year. We haven't heard the date yet, but when it's announced we'll be ready. I'm not sure if 08 was the first time or not, I joined the club just over a year ago, so 09 was the first one for me. If you missed it last year, we bbqed hot dogs for everyone there, and plan on doing that again this year. If a free lunch doesn't get you here, what will?  LL~

Hey Brian,

Wish I would have known they were hot dogs, I thought they were tube steaks????? Ha Ha Yes 08 was the first year we opened up our field to help the golden state contest. We meant a lot of nice people and looking forward to seeing them again, when the contest is here. Gary

I'm sure you folks out there in winterland would be interested to hear that us poor PC Flyers located in the wonderful Golden State encountered some liquid sunshine yesterday and were also unable to fly this weekend.  This is a rare occasion for us but we can deal with it.  According to the local weatherman, we may have to wait until next weekend for our next chance to fly.
