NATs entries
« on: May 19, 2008, 01:20:59 PM »
I checked the AMA website this morning. To date, there are 11 Open fliers and 15 Advanced fliers entered.

AMA bases the trophy count on entries they have received by the close of official pre entry. With this entry level, they will not sponsor too many trophies.  This year the close of pre entry is in mid to later June (I don’t have the official date in front of me.)

If you are planning on attending the NATs, get your entry in soon. This will maximize the trophies sponsored by AMA.

Hope to see you in July.

Hi Paul,

Uh, let's see. For me it would be 2439.34 miles one way to the Nats. I got gas this morning and it was $3.89 a gallon. My car gets 22 miles per gallon. That means I'll need about 111 gallons to make the trip one way. That's 431.79 for gas one way. About, depending on gas prices in July and as we've seen, they can vary widely ... upward. So that's about $864 just for gas and not counting any driving done from the motel to the flying site and wherever. Hmmm. Motel would be from probably $70 to $90 a night. Call it $75 for a lower end job. Now, if I'm conservative and only spend one night in a motel on the way (driving as far as I can and maybe catnapping at a rest stop) plus at 6 nights in a motel there and one on the way home, thats 8 nights: $600. Then there's food. call it $250 for the 13 days or so (7 days at the Nats plus 3 days driving each way). So doing it on a shoestring you're looking at about $1700. Now we all know that there are a lot of other expenses along the way and like the bill would be well over $2000.

With gas quickly heading to $4.00 a gallon and no end to the upward spiral in site, I'd imagine that the attendance is likely to be mostly folks that live close to Muncie and the 6 to a dozen top-of-the-heap pilots from other areas.

OK, I'm probably being a bit pessimistic. But with the cost of travel heading nowhere but up in a hurry, a lot of people just won't be able to afford it. I had planned to attend my first Nats this year, but with the costs going up so much, the amount I saved for it is just not going to cut it so I won't be attending. Maybe someday.

Randy is correct.  The distance is keeping me away, too.  While our AMA site may be modeler's heaven, getting there is a real problem.

Hey Floyd,

Maybe when I can build one of those planes that will take apart and fit in a brief case, I can fly there. Still not cheap, but I would imagine that a plane ticket, if purchased well ahead of time, would be less than the almost $900 in gas. Hmmm, well, maybe not.

These days, I'm into 60-size stunters.  Even take-apart would not fit in the overhead.  Also, these days, the airlines charge a lot extra for any baggage larger than a bread-box!

Well here in the CHicago area (on the way to Muncie for you), we have the dubious distinction of having the highest averaged priced gas in the country. Out here in the 'burbs, Regular is already $3.99 at the  Quikee Mart, so by this Memorial Day weekend it will be over $4, and I see they are already talking about $5! Yow! ~^

Maybe the future will be video contests  ;), video camera set at the judges location, enter and vote--talk about a beauty contest!

Years ago (eight? ten?) I urged the PAMPA EC and the AMA to consider moving the Nats around the Country...I suggested the years that the Team Trials were held in Muncie.....imagine the strain that flying BOTH the Nats and Team trials will cause folks.

It's still a viable option. Imagine: 2009 a Nats in, say, Washington State, 2011 in, say, Georgia, 2013 in Texas, 2015 in California and 2017 in Mass?

The real problem with taking the Nat's and moving it around the country is, That if it's not AMA doing the moving, You're not allowed to call it a Nat's. only AMA has THE Nat's. You could have a PAMPA championship, just not a national championship.
We talked about doing something similar with pylon and were informed by AMA, that only they host the Nat's.
We always thought that half the fun of the Nat's was traveling to different parts of the country every year.

I would venture that, if a rational plea was made to the Academy that they would at least listen...

Maybe 5 bucks a gallon will induce the AMA to reconsider the concept of a traveling Nats.  Thats assuming you could get the manpower at the various locations.

Steve...
One of the major reasons that the Academy likes the central location is that the manpower and paraphernalia necessary for the other control line events doesn't have to be lugged around the USA. The catch fences used in Speed and Racing are costly to transport and maintain and very few venues have adequate facilities for these activities.

I believe that Stunt and Scale could be successfully hosted in several regions, but that most of the racing/speed venues have fallen into disrepair of have disappeared altogether.

The speed cage at Buder would need some re-hab, I believe. There is also a suitable site (only one circle) in Middlesex, NJ.

Cleveland had a way cool site, but it got bulldozed.

Not to be a naysayer, but I suspect that if you made a reasonable appeal to the AMA, the response would be blow out you, uh, back side.
