Randy,
What was the vote?  Were there just two bids, Muncie and Tucson?

 Bergen County, NJ, too.

I will try to restrain my utter and complete astonishment that Muncie was chosen. And with nothing but a date, too, amazing!

Won't speak for Randy .....

Looking at the AMA Calendar for the NAC, it shows a couple of things, some no problem, some at least a bit of a concern.

  • The F2B Team Trials are listed ONLY for Sept 8-9 and not for Sept 10-11.
  • There is an event "Flying Aces Outdoor Champions" scheduled for the same days (8-9). Given that that is a Free Flight event, I would expect conflict with their flights anywhere else on the site depending on wind direction.
  • The Calendar shows Wynn Paul as the CD.
  • There is nothing shown at the NAC Monday-Wednesday preceding, so my guess is that practice on the L-pad and elsewhere would be allowed.

Hi Frank

There were 3 legitimate bids, Muncie was the first one put in last October, then Tucson and New Jersey, Muncie won with 7 votes. Everything was done in accordance to the AMA Book on how these get done, the post above about Muncie having only a date and trying to insinuate wrong doing is false. If anything was stretched , it was to go beyond the cutoff date and allows more bids to be placed, which we did.

The site is already approved for Sept 8-11 as I stated, I will look into the Post Bill Lee wrote about dates.

The flying is good for Thursday thru Sunday with Monday a Rain day if needed, I will check into whether or not we can get there any earlier than Thursday for flights

We have had free flight contest simultaneously with the TT several times before, and it was not much of a problem. Even when they flew from essentially across the street (just east of the parking lot, between the L-pad and the farmhouse). I actually enjoyed that. The big risk would be that we all think that looked neater than stunt and we all convert to FF!

Sheesh...guess that answers that question.

There was never any real question about it, I think we had already made our motel reservations. And don't get me wrong, Muncie is an excellent site for such a thing (it's a lot better for a TT than a NATs, that's for sure). But most of the voters don't have to haul their butts 6000 miles (round trip) even once.

I did get a refly one time when a FF DT'd into the circle.  Don't recall if it was a TT or a Nats.

I have confirmed these dates Again , that I posted with the AMA. The dates are good 8th - 11 with the 12th Monday being a Rain date if needed.
I had confirmed the dates before I posted the first time so nothing has changed on the dates.
I do not anticipate any problem with the Free Flighters

The farthest anyone in the continental United States could drive to Muncie is 2455 miles from Neah Bay Washington. Only an over statement of 18%. Not bad for terrestrial distances. Maybe you could work on it and try to improve the accuracy enough to figure out when the "Big One" will hit us.   LL~

Actually, the Comet Sparky is a 32" wingspan rubber-powered cabin design.

The Comet plan above is the Comet "Mercury", good with a Bantam 19 or Ohlsson 19 or 23. Just finished one of these up, (about 62 years ago!)

Larry, according to the AMA's FAI Teams Procedures manual, the site is selected by a vote of the Team Selection Committee. The members of the F2B TSC are listed on the AMA website under the Competition heading.

Hmmm...pretty easy to guess who the three votes for Tucson were and also why there were only three.

Seems a little slanted to the east!!!

Might be surprised at who voted for what, but it's somewhat moot.

Of course it's slanted to the East. 300 stunt fliers in CA and AZ have the same representation as 10 guys in North and South Dakota. Not that the guys in South Dakota shouldn't have a say but it means you and I have disproportionately less say. This has been a feature of the AMA from the start. It's also the reason WAM was formed in the first place, and for C/L it was at least as big as the AMA for a while - a very long time ago.

You and I knew the answer before this all started, anyway, so hard to be too disappointed or surprised. I have no doubt the vote is as reported. But it would make an interesting study to see what would have happened had the vote gone narrowly to Tucson - would the AMA override it to put it back to Muncie (like they did with having the W/C at Oshkosh)? Tough to have a "international center for aeromodelling" sit idle while people fly an important contest in public park 2500 miles away.
