Title: New Years flying at Tacoma Narrows
Post by: Randy Powell on December 30, 2010, 10:03:33 PM
Well, providing weather dweebs aren't again wrong, I plan to fly on Saturday at the Narrows. It's gonna be cold, but it's supposed to be clear. If no one else shows up, I guess it will be me, three coats, a big can of lighter fluid and my stooge.

I was just there at Christmas. My son lives in Portland. But not this weekend.

I had to take my daughter to Sea-Tac and put her on a plane for Boston. Her bags had to go into the back of the pickup. The canopy lock was frozen, and once that was defrosted, the latch was still frozen. Locked it again later, and by 9am, it was frozen again.  Monokote heat gun worked ok. So, watch for that nonsense to delay the departure. Lighter fluid might do the trick, especially with a match applied for heat!

Still patches of black ice around these parts, but today's sun might fix that. It'd be nice if somebody was to put some NaCl on the slick spots, but I don't look for that to happen anytime soon. Make it TMF, and I'd be interested, and I know Mike is dying to fly the Chizzler some more, since he has to completely start over on flap tweeks plus he's changed the control ratios... y1 Steve

Well, the latest report is saying even colder so I may wimp out. I'm not up for an hour and a half drive to TMF to freeze my jones off.

Mike called this AM, and said that he was meeting Randy at noon at TNA. It was 29deg. F. at my house, so I decided to stay, not go. It's a Clash thing.  LL~ Steve

The Wichihawks MAC renewed ita old tradition of flying on New Years day.  Sub freezing temps, but light breezes made flying tolerable.  Seven members showed up and at least five put in flights.  We did take a few pictures and so I will get them developed and perhaps post them later.

Well, Mike and I showed up and got in about 4 flights each. Looks like I have a leak somewhere. Set the RPM on the ground then have it go rich in the air. I'll pull it apart and see what's up. Mike's new ride is awesome. And it's LIGHT!. He says 44oz. I think he's putting his thumb on the scale. The RO-Jett 40 on a muffler seems to have plenty of juice. A few tweaks and it's really flying good. Mike is about to crack his face open with that grin.

Weather was about 34 degrees and clear. Nice 3 MPH breeze out of the northeast made a nice day. Not really very cold at all out in the sun. Attached are a couple of pictures.

Thanks for the update, Randy. Good to hear that the wind direction was ok and all that. Good to hear that Mike's Chiz is flying better. Now, get that Ring'ster Deluxe fixed up for when the weather is cloudy, calm, and warm!

Hi Randy!

Good news and bad news here! LOL!!  Got to go out and fly Friday (rain was threatening today so we stayed in the Fortress of Solitude and worked on stuff)

Bad News, I ignored the Doctor and went out to fly Friday.  Now the sinus infection is back to being almost as bad as when I went to the Doctor on Wednesday............ such is life! ;D

Now, get the "Low Rider" painted!!! LL~

Happy New Year!

Bill,

Well, I'm considering new options for paint. We'll see. It's closing in on ready to start finishing.

Spent Sunday off with the Spouse grooming horses. Hers plus three from a friend that is out of town. At least I had a 1400 pound heater nearby. It was cold.

Grooming horses is how I paid for my early planes many many years ago.   Amazing how much heat horses and cows put out.  Except for when I would first start to milk a cow.  Did it by hand back then.  Didn't take long to warm up.   LL~ LL~
