Just finished up my new United for classic. Final weight came out to 51 ounces, which I'm fairly happy with. Balance came out just about perfect on it too! Power is a PA 40UL on a header muffler made by Randy Powell.
I'm shooting for the first flights this Saturday

Really nice Matt. Each one looks as if it nicer than the last. You are brave to do a gold color scheme, I know it is not the easiest color to work with. Looking forward to hearing the flight report. 8)

Now that is one classy bird. #^

Yep, nice work. Interesting color scheme. Should really stand out. Now, go out and beat up on people with it.

If only I were about 3000 miles closer Rich, I would hand you a couple planes for the calendar...

Looks great Matt! Glad to see you're not jumping on the electric bandwagon too, a "real deal" airplane IMO. y1

Thanks for the comments so far guys! Here's a couple quick words on the color scheme:
The color scheme is almost a direct copy from one of my grandfather's airplanes from the 90s. The gold was mixed to get the shade I wanted. For an entire can of Brodak gold, I mixed about 1/2oz of Diana Cream into it and that changed the color of the gold just enough to get what I was looking for. The maroon was Miss Ashley Red mixed with insignia blue until I got the color I wanted. I can't remember the ratio I used though.
It may look deceiving but this paint scheme was the most difficult scheme to mask out I've done so far. If I were to do the plane over again, I would stick with the same color scheme but change the steps I took to get the painting done.

Thanks Wayne!!
I've had more issues with my electric RC airplanes than I've had with gas/glow airplanes in both RC and CL, which makes me not want to change over to electric anytime soon. I'm also very happy with the way the rear exhaust motors perform and don't see a need to switch to electric.

That is one awesome looking plane. Also stay with what works.
-
Matt,
Outstanding!
Picture perfect finish and detail!
Amazing the canopy finishing detail around the perimiter! H^^
Especially when not to much sticks to canopy material.
Any secrets you can give up?
Super great job!

You bringing it to the NATS to compete in Classic?
Thanks!

Thanks Steve!
No NATS this year. We're going to try and make it next year though

Yeah you better make plans to be at a Nats sometime soon. You don't want to be as old as Paul when you fly in your next one do you? >:D
The plane looks awesome Matt!!!!

Matt,
Great job!
Derek,
Just remember that you will be grandpa in no time... Like Doc says... respect your elders, your day is coming.

Hey Derek, remember to respect your elders.
I do have a lot of respect for Paul, but that doesn't mean that we cant have a little pre Nats trash talk.

I'm hoping for next year so I can see how well I stack up against you guys! and if the NATS is the same week next year, I'll be turning 21 that week as well!

It was a beautiful stunt heaven day today so we decided to fly the United fort he first time. Unfortunately, we came up a little short. As I was setting the needle, I noticed it began varying widely between 9100 and 10000RPM. I shut the motor off thinking there is an air leak somewhere.
I'll take it apart and change the fuel line, and check the tank again before I go out and try to fly it again.
-
Matt,
That is a very nice plane. I like the way you detailed the cockpit.
It seems like the canopy is brought back compared to the pictures of the brodak version. I prefer the way you installed the canopy. Completely changes the look of the plane.
Makes me want to build one. If I only had a little time....

I was there for Bob "Champione's" original United at Flushing Meadows. Brother Matt, you have done him proud.
I am so glad to have you among us. #^

What size and pitch prop? I thought you had that info posted but I could not find it here. Also what nitro fuel?
Derek

I am all with you on the trash... I hope poor old Paul can make it without a walker... I was just seeing how you would react at some trash to you.... old man!

Cyclone 11-4.5, and Powermaster 10-22GMA.
As I was ground running it yesterday it began surging as well as it was running, but I thought it was because I was running low on fuel and the motor was just leaning it out...turned out to not be the case.

Its kinda hard to determine without being there but I suspect that your original assumption is correct. Maybe a leak in the fuel system somewhere. Brodak tank?
My first thought was that the engine might be over or under propped but I think what you have should work fine. I have found, however, that Powermaster 10% is like Sig Champion 5%.

Also check the plug, when they grow taters they start acting funny.

I'm fairly confident it's a leak somewhere in the system. I got a Brodak tank in there currently.

Checked the plug when I was starting it up for the first time since it took forever to get it to turn over. Didn't see any taters on the plug.

Powermaster 10-22GMA.
What color is it? When did you buy it?
If it's purple, make sure to clean your airplane thoroughly as soon as you're done flying for the day, and consider adding some purple or fuchsia accents to your paint scheme.
-
Thread drift: Bought some 10/22 the other day. New batch at the LHS. Was clear, not purple so it seems they have gotten the message. Also, the purple GMA 10/22 I had been using did not stain the clear dope over white but it sure discolored the Rustoleum painted landing after only one flying session. Just my experience, other's may differ. OK, back to you Matt. 8)
*That's Rustoleum painted landing GEAR, my bad.

I'm really glad to hear that, because I just ordered a case of the stuff. It's nice to know that they listen to people.
Mark Scarborough reports that his Avenger has suffered some mild staining -- I'm pretty sure that he used some sort of catalyzed automotive clear on that, and that's a paint job to really care about.
-
This is the older (like a year or so) 10-22 because it's pink. The fuel I have at school is purple.
-
Really looks good, Matt! Great job with the color scheme and choice of colors. Good luck!
Thanks!

That looks really nice Matt, great job on the colors and thanks so much for the clear canopy with "stuff inside".
I remember Bob Lampiones' original so well. His silver paint jobs were stunning!

Pretty !

Finally got around to taking the front end apart on United and found the tank sprung a leak when it was running. We sealed it, air tested it again and put it back together. Might put a flight in tomorrow on it.
-
Got the first two flights on United today, and both flights were full patterns!! The plane flies great and should continue to get better the more I trim it out!

Way to go Matt, now go putting grass stains or tar stains on the top side. LL~ LL~

Glad to see it's flying well. That muffler setup tends to sound pretty cool (or so others have told me). Hope it is working well for you.

The muffler sounds really cool!!! It reminds me of an ST 46 only louder and in RE form. It definitely did seem to act a lot like a pipe since it was more or less the same speed everywhere in the pattern.
The only thing is I'm using very little fuel (maybe it's because I'm used to the fuel consumption of the pipe). On 4 1/2 ounces I'm running almost 10 minutes.
-
That sounds like a venturi issues. But hey, if it's got the power you want...

I have a #16 in there now I believe. I have a #14 in my other PA that I might try switching to so I can get the fuel consumption back up.
-
How's that TT prop working for you? Have you tried any others? H^^ Steve

It seemed like it worked well so far. I have a Majic 11.25-4.25 with UC that I want to try, and I'd like to try the Bolly 11.8-3.8 that works very well with this motor on the pipe.
-
Well, fuel burned usually equals power available. On the other hand, if the engine is giving you the power you want, just regulate the amount of fuel in the tank. Mine started off using about 4.25 ounces. After it was broken in and working well, the fuel consumption went up quite a lot. To something like 5.5oz. I also used a bigger venturi in there and went to a more efficient prop.
-
I have a 4 1/2 ounce tank in there now and it ran a very long time. I could have done an old time stunt patternin addition to the full AMA pattern I just did.
I won't know until the rain stops and I can get more flights, but I'll get a reliable time to go by next time I fly it, and start fooling around with props and Venturi size. I'm thinking going up to the Bolly prop I use for the pipe with the bigger Venturi should work well, if the plane likes that combo.
-
Got five flights on United today. I switched to the bigger Venturi and the motor came to life! Absolutely perfect 4-2 run, and I can hear a faint "pipe-like" rattle at the tops of certain maneuvers right where I need a little extra boost! Needless to say, your header muffler is working like a charm Randy Powell!
I'm a little soft up top and I'm hinging in the corners of the triangles, so I'm going to shorten the lines a foot, and take some tip weight out. It also needs an ever so slight flap tweak. I noticed the outboard wing was up ever so slightly inverted when I let my grandfather take a flight on it.
All in all, so far I'm happy with it, and it's performing better and better with each flight!
Can't wait to do some damage in classic at next years NATS with it >:D
-
Matt, glad to see you're getting what you want now. Sometimes it's just futzing around with stuff until you get the right combination.
-

I'm still using almost no fuel. With four ounces of gas, I'm running right around 8 minutes. I could probably get away with 3 1/2 and still have fuel left over.
-
More prop load will increase the fuel burn and may make the airplane happier overhead.
I'm wondering why Randy's fuel consumption increased as the engine loosened up, and that's all I can figger oot, eh? (Practising up my accent for the Western Canadian Stunt Champs, eh, hoser?) VD~ Steve

That's another idea I could try that I didn't think of...thanks Steve for the idea!

And increasing venturi size and using a bigger prop.
