Merco 61 Bearing size

  I know I'm in the wrong place but it gets more exposure here. Who knows what part number to ask for ? I need bearings for a Merco .61ss twin ring engine. It was new in 1992  I ordered from Boca & it's 1/8 undersize.

I too have had problems with the Merco 49 and 61 bearings being tight. I have stock bearings that are tight. Mostly the one that fits on the crank. Getting them off is impossible without a small bearing separator. I can't seem to find the right size either. I order some from a guy is AZ and they were too tight too.. I use a 1" wooden dowel drilled out to a 1/2" that is about 4-5" long to seat them on the crank.

The bearings are the same from the MK 1 thru to end as far as I know:

Rear 1/2" x 1 1/8" x 1/4"      Front 8 x 22 x 7 (metric!!)

Yes, bearing splitter helps with the rear race removal!

 Boca Bearing sent the bearings listed in the reading sentto me by you fellows. Only problem is the rear bearing in my Merco is much larger than sent....  I'm not surprised. I was just hopeing I could finish one little project this Winter .

It may be the very last ones that have the bigger bearing. I think they were built for powering target drones. Why not just measure up the bearing that is in the engine? Any bearing stockist could probably set you up with the correct one if you take the dismantled engine to them. Might be a good time to buy a bearing puller too.

What Andrew said! Just take the old bearings, let them read the numbers and brand name, and they should be able to cross-reference to some that will work. Also good to mention rpm range....and I'd ask for a shielded front bearing (one side only). If that's too much for them, a sealed bearing would be ok, if you'll remove the inner seal and wash out the grease. Don't forget to beat up Boca Bearing for sending the wrong chit! They are also confused on Magnum XLS .36 front bearing.  Steve

Rear bearing is an R8 which is an open bearing.  The old original Hoffmann number is S5 V3.

The front bearing is a 608 ZZ shielded or 608 2RS for the sealed type.

As Steve said, just leave one shield or seal in the front bearing

That there is just plain unheard of! It might take a 10x loupe to see and read, but I just can't imagine that there would be no numbers and a branding of some sort. I'd love to see it, so don't hurl it like a Fox .15! Regardless, a good bearing supply store should be able to measure any bearing and come up with a replacement, unless it is a custom size like the VF .40/.46 (F/R?). In that case, you would want to go back to Boca Bearing, or check with Ian or Tom Dixon.     Steve

Hello John,
As Steve said, it is very odd indeed not to have some form of ID on a bearing. Just buy yourself a cheap set of vernier calipers (any modeler should have one anyway!). all you need do is measure the outside diameter, inside diameter and bearing thickness (make sure that if the answer looks strange then you probably have a metric bearing and imperial calipers or vice versa).
  That is all the info you need to find a replacement bearing, simple as that. Just go on any bearing manufacturers website and you will find what you are looking for. The various grades of bearing are not important in this particular application. Just get the cheapest one you can (but don't buy Chinese bearings!).
  I have a couple of very late Merco 61s which are the target drone ones if I have my facts straight(?). I am tempted to strip one down and measure the back bearings and compare them to the standard ones. I really cannot see why the manufacturer would do a thing like change the bearing size at such a late stage in the life of the engine.

 Andrew, being these engines are British nothing surprises me. Unique & artistic in it's own way anything I ever own that was English was always ... shall I refer to it as unlike another.
   Steve, I won't toss the bearing but I do have an idea.. I'll go to the Midwest a week early this year & drive on to Ohio & search out the young boy named Anthony. I'll bring  him back to Muncie & put him up somewhere. Then on Saturday after the final 5  I'll put the bearing on the Lpad & have Anthony wish it into the corn field.  " That's right Anthony the cornfield is a good place for that bearing"
