New Stuntwagon
« on: August 03, 2009, 04:49:45 PM »
Today was a good day for Scott Reise who is the proud owner of a new Stuntwagon given to him by Don McClave. He is really amped up about this plane. Scott has the particulars and I am sure he will chime in here and give lots of information. In any case he is really amped about this! o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP o2oP CLP** CLP** CLP** CLP** CLP** CLP** CLP** VD~

OK..I'll give out the info. First Don McClave built this for VSC. OS-35 MAX-S for power. Don put up three flights. A knock on the door, DON handed me the plane and the engines and said HERE you go! WOW, all he asked fly it and see what you think. SO last Saturday I put up two flights with the OS-35 MAX-S and three ounces of new nose weight. Plane was stable but the engine run sucked and I didn't want to spent any time on it. SO Sunday NASCAR was rained out and going through withdrawals (racing) I decided to work on this Stuntwagon. Most of the guy's said that I needed to put in an .25 sized engine. I got out all of mine....none where close to fitting. WELL, OK lets do something I like... McCOY .40 Red Head and use an 4 pitch prop. So I got one out that was broke in and the McCoy fit right in. The prop I chose 11x4 Torpedo cut down to 10.5x4. Took the plane out to the field on Monday. After some looks "OH a McCoy" it was time to show what I hoped the engine would do. First run to slow. Second through the rest of the day. WOW ENGINE was like a Swiss watch. Plane was happy and grooved like on rails. .015x60' 9300-9500 Rpm's, Riese tongue muffler, ST Type NVA, Power Master 10%n 18%o with 4 ounces of caster added, T-Bolt plug. I'm real happy so far. More to come after Tomorrows flights.

Scott; How do you do it. I have 2 McCoy R/H 40's, and niether one will run reliably on 10% nitro. I have tried different props, and even adding head gaskets, and they just do not run right on 10% for me. They are both on profliles, and maybe that is the difference, but they always cut out after leveling off inverted after inside loops. I go back to 5% and they run fine. On my Magicians, I have been running 12-6 APC's cut down to 11", and the engines seem to love this prop. I run non uniflow, Thunderbolt R/C plugs, and Sig 25% all castor fuel. With this setup, they run a pretty much solid four stroke through the whole pattern until I get to the clover, where it rockets to the top of the circle after the second loop in a 2 stroke. They do make gobs of power with this setup. I have never tried running 4 pitch props, and maybe that would let the engine wind up a little more so that I could run 10% without it cutting out on me. There are times I would like to run 10% so that I would not have to take 2 jugs of fuel to contests as this is what I run in my Fox 59.

Jim,
You are probably using piston/cyl. from an R/C version of the McCoy 40, I have had similar experiences using this engine cyl. combination.  The timing on the intake side of the U/C cylinder is considerably different and gives a blowdown of approx. 10 deg. as opposed to 18 deg. for the R/C cylinder. The running characteristics are quite different. The only engine I have found this timing on is the Lightning Bolt 40 (ECJ #81). All the other 40's I have checked, both u/c and r/c have the more aggressive timing. Typical dimension from top of cyl. to top of int. port is .770 for the r/c version and .742 for the u/c version. I have thought of changing the timing on a r/c cyl. to see if it results in a good run, but haven't had the need yet.  Hope this helps.
