« on: July 24, 2010, 09:07:34 PM »
OK, here it is. It has a serviceable finish and --**Finally**-- I have a fairly light plane.

The Ringmaster Deluxe - Redux

600 square inches
48.5oz (as it sits there - may need a touch of tail weight, but it's pretty close. that's 11 oz lighter than the first one)
Power is an OS 40VF with Randy Smith pipe

The finish is crappy Coverlite with dope and catalysed polyurethane over the top. It got a bit of orange peel in it, but truth is, I don't have the heart to rub it out since the covering is less than optimal.

That looks very cool to me Randy. I would be proud of any plane being under 50 oz. I can not seem to hit that target. HB~>

If you don't like it build a big box and put it on a Grayhound bus to my house. I would be proud to own a plane that nice looking. <=

Paul,

It's not horrible or anything, but it will get about 12 points at contest around here. Luckily, there are no appearance points in Profile.   ;D

Hi Jack,

No, I got so frustrated with the covering (Coverlite) that I just had to go with a minimum trim. Paint sort of sticks to it, but pulls up with tape very, very easily. I finally figured out you have to really rough the surface to get a mechanical bond since there is not real chemical bond.

But hey, it's light and straight so it should fly pretty well. I'll live with the plain-jane paint scheme.

Hope to test fly it tomorrow.

Edit

I should note, based on a comment on another forum, that this plane does meet NW Profile rules as I understand them. The fuselage is 3/4" wide without the nose blocks and is 3/4" at the trailing edge of the wing. and the engine is exposed "lugs to plug", though since it canted, that is cover up a bit.

Hi Matt,

Yea, this one is pretty bulletproof. something else might break, I guess, but it won't be the bellcrank.

No test flights today. The wind is howling.

Beautiful plane.  I love the engine/pipe mount and set up.  I have a RO-Jett 40RE I would like to try in this configuration.

Zuriel,

I know of a guy building one that plans to use an Enya 32 RE. I imagine it will work well if he keeps it light so I don't know any reason why a RO-Jett 40 RE wouldn't also work.

The trick has been that if you are using a light engine, you can go with the original layout. If you are using a boat anchor like the OS40VF that I used on this one, it's a good idea to shorten the nose an 1" or so.

Watch out Randy as I put an order into the man.  Hope he gets enough to go ahead with it.  Don't tell the kid tho as I plan on building another Arctic Fox.  I have a RO-Jett .40 REBS that should power it just fine, the RM plane that is.  Too much power for the AF. H^^

How many of you guys would want a carbon gear included. Walter asked if I would consider making a bunch of carbon gears like the ones I used for kits. I told him I'd think about it. Not sure if I can produce 20 or so sets of these gear. They are a lot of work.

Very nice Randy!  I recall you sid the first one flew very well, the new one at a lighter weight should also be poised for success!

I like the creativity on the profile - ots of eye candy there, makes me wonder if a so called full fuselage version would be as much fun to look at...

Dennis,

I have thought about just doing a full fuse version, but somehow, it loses it's charm.   ;D

Hey Dennis go the the full fuse.  But, don't blame Randy if it doesn't fly the same.

Randy,  dural gear is not that hard to make.  The carbon gear I had on the Arctic Fox cost a lot more than aluminum. H^^

For those considering an engine like the Ro-Jett 40, don't forget that Brother Dee Rice discovered that the LA46-S runs the same prop at the same lap time/line length on his Oriental Plus as his RJ40.  His OP is about 53 ounces to my memory, so a sub 50 ouncer here should be a cinch.  Easy to do as Randy's OS40RE with the pipe is a lot heavier, so there is some weight shaving on the engine package.  The ACAD drawings I did for Randy's plane showed the standard profile configuration for the LA46.

Yea, if someone uses a light engine like the RO-Jett 40, PA 40UL or even an OS 46LA, then the standard nose moment shown will work fine. If you go with a boat anchor like the OS 40VF, it helps to cut an inch off the nose (which is what I did with this new one). Better than stuffing 3oz of lead in the tail (which I had to do with the original).

Don't listen to him Dennis. It won't have the classic look this one has. Him and Pat Johnston are coming to the jet style a little late.   ;D

Allen,

I don't know, I was just talking about the weight of the engine sans exhaust.

Greg,

Well, truth is, I miscalculated and the gear is about 2 inches wider than I had planned. I didn't take into account the width of the mount when I was laying it out. Call it a momentary lapse. So if I end up doing gear, it will be about 2 inches narrower.

On the other hand, if it works out, who knows.   8)

We'll find out about 10am on Saturday.
