New RingMaster Deluxe
« on: October 15, 2010, 05:54:14 AM »
Ever since Randy Powell posted pictures of his first RMD I knew I was going to build one.  It was the coolest profile I had ever seen.   I ordered plans and laser ribset from Pat Johston, but was busy with other projects and put it on the back burner.  Randy lost his first bird to a failed bellcrank and promptly built a second RMD.  When I saw that, it relit the fires.  Everything else I had going at the time was shoved to the back burners.  I started this project the last week of July, finished it yesterday.  There is a construction thread on the "BrotherHood of the Ring" site with lots of pictures showing the build process.  Couple of unique features, the gear is a custom lamination from purplehart veneers, the elevator pushrod is in a tunnel inside the fuse,  transparent finish using Pete Petersens methods that were published in StuntNews about a year ago.  The weight of the finish was about 4.1 oz (normally 10+ for me on a bird this size).  Total weight 48.6 oz,  area 615",  wing loading 11.3.  AeroTiger36 and Randy's 40 size pipe.   I am off to Baton Rouge for the contest this weekend, may put it up for the first flight at the practice session this afternoon.  Big thanks to Randy Powell for sharing his design and help with the build process...

Allan,

Man, the final looks very cool. I'm anxious to hear how it flies. How did the balance come out? With a light engine like you're using (versus the boat anchor 40VF I used) should put the balance spot on.

Pete would be proud of the finish.

That's a real stunner. Still has a lot of Ringmaster flavor in it especially when viewed from the side.

I can't stop looking at the finish. I like the way the wood grain shows thru.

Did you dye the silkspan yellow then just put on clear dope?

Since Allan is getting ready for a contest, I'll answer. The finish is based on Pete Peterson's method. It's covered with polyspan on the wings and I believe silkspan on the rest. Clear built up then shot with clear tinted with Kandy Koncentrate. That gives the see through colors. I know that Allan shot clear lacquer on top and is still contemplating shooting a catalyzed clear on top to protect it.

I'm kinda planning on building an RMD, to go with a K&B 40 I have.

But it's not going to look nearly that nice, I can guarantee you that.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Thanks Randy for the info.
Randy was mostly correct with his reply about the finish.  However I did vary from Pete's method a little.  After covering, Pete built up base with clear dope,  then sprayed on the tinted coats.   I included the tint in my brushed on coats while filling the weave of the polyspan on the wings and building a base on the rest of the surfaces (silkspan like Randy said).  Then I also tinted the sprayed on coats.  The tint comes from House of Kolor.  About $28 for an 8oz can (online), buts thats enough to do about four planes.  I only used 1/2 oz tint in a 20 oz batch of clear dope/thinner, for both the brushed and sprayed coats..
I used Randolph's non-taut clear dope(#1690) with Finish Pro lacquer thinner (slow) and Randolph's retarder from start to finish.  Red and blue trims colors is Brodak dope with the same thinner & retarder..  Be warned, dope/lacquer can be some finiky stuff.  I had blotching, crazing, and blushing along the way.  Proceed with caution.  I do not think it was from the thinner I used,  but I have no other clues as to why.   May try using Randolph's with the next one.  I love doing the dope and tissue part, but what comes after that scares the hell out of me...

This is the best i could get from Babelfish. I guessed Portugese. "Oh! that gran proyecto of pretty Rigmaster… muy"
Oops. I just noticed he modified his message to English. Babelfish didn't do too bad though.

Great job Allan!

Kudo's to Randy Powell for taking the Ringmaster design up to a whole new level, and big slap on the back to Allan for great execution and finish.
Looking forward to flight reports.
