New Ride for VSC: Party like its 1969!
« on: March 02, 2025, 09:30:03 PM »

1969 was the last NATs of the Classic era, so Bob Lampione’s Saber, Mike Stott’s Chipmunk, & my Hawker Typhoon, were the last NATs champion designs of the era. Earlier today and 46years later, I FINALLY finished a replica of my 1969 airplane.  The new Typhoon includes some structural updating and lightening to allow it to be built with “modern” wood.  It has a film finish, is electric powered and weighs 47.5 oz with a full tank, same as the original weighed with an empty tank.  In 1969 NO ONE had seen the target tow stripes on a British airplane, and as far as I know no one else has ever duplicated it - thus I had to. At VSC we party like we used to, for me (I hope) that means partying like its 1969 all over again!

The original flew very well, I am looking forward to flying its descendent...

Are you using the same handle from 1969?

Really nice Dennis.  I refurbished my 23 year-old T-Bird.  I hope it will hold together for one more VSC.  See you there!

Denny that looks fabulous!    Might need a noisemaker that sounds like a Mac .40.   I know you'll enjoy that machine!

I believe I have the plans for the Typhoon and it's up near the top of my list!! I looked at that article a lot back when it hit the magazine, and was building the interest of someday flying stunt respectably. And if I had ever actually gotten one built it would have had the tow plane stripes, or it WILL have the tow plane stripes!!  Nice job!!

THANKS for all the nice comments folks!

Mark: I will be using the replacement for the 1969 handle, which shall remain in its display box.  Looking forward to seeing your T-bird!

Dave: you are right about the noisemaker.  Still think the McCoy 40 had the best stunt run of any stunt 40 - but the worst metallurgy & QC.

Dan: I built a profile version of this bird from the Frank Hopkins kit.  Did a regular warbird bottom finish, and no one gave it a 2nd look.  Guess I can claim, "still crazy after all these years!"

From break in to throw away was about 50 of the best engine runs imaginable.

GMA was chroming the McCoy 40 sleeve for people, no? I had him re-chrome one of my ST60's back in the day. He got it done right before he passed, but his kids had to ship it back to me... sigh... I think I just wanted something with his touch and initials on it because ST60's were pretty easy to come by even then, so I could have just as easily grabbed another one. We do tend to form emotional bonds with these little lumps of metal don't we? Heh...

I'm not familiar with the Frank Hopkins kit?? Or are youtalking about kit bashing the Custom Models profile Nobler kit??

As far as a McCoy .40 goes, if you have the lightning bolt version of the .40, the guts out of a later series 21 .40 with a Dykes ring will drop right in and then you can replace the ring as needed. Rings are out there, MECOA I think. I have built up a few but have not run them yet. The Series 21 .40cores that I had seemed to be pretty low time as the ring gap was pretty tight. The engines were just missing drive washers and looked filthy but were good parts donors for a conversion of a lightning bolt .40.

Custom Models/Frank Hopkins did the Typhoon as (I think) their 2nd kit offering.

Dad upgraded a lightning bolt with a Series 21 top end.  Would run great for maybe ten flights, the ring would wear out and he'd have to rebuild it.  Ran out of rings and the continuous rebuilding wore out the cylinder screw bosses in case and it ended up blowing its stack!
