Chris Cox is a world class competitor.

He would be if you could get him to try out for the Royal Canadian stunt team.

Chris has done well here in the States against other world class fliers, so I think that makes him a world class competitor.  And he is really a nice guy.

Looks like a molded plastic model.

It is, sorta. He and Ark and Alan are molding wings in fancy female
molds. They’re really cool (the wings and molds, that is).

Hello everyone, thanks for the positive replies.   The Mig 3 has incorporated many firsts for myself and I am happy to report it is looking to be an outstanding stunt model.  It is another inline model, with the motor, wing and stabilizer are all aligned on the horizontal axis.

The fuselage is moulded, as per my Hellcat article which PAMPA published a couple of years ago, and as noted above, the wing is a moulded composite structure.   Good friend and CNC machine shop owner, Arkady Gorosetsky, very much wanted to try his hand at moulding a wing, for which he produced two beautiful wing moulds based on my Hellcat wing.  Following many many questions of close friends who have had some experience in this area, Arkady, Alan Resinger and I were able to produce wings for our new models.  Arkady is also building a Mig while Alan decided to build another Bearcat based on the Reno racer, Rare Bear.  Arkady and I utilized a Herex laminated foam core, while Alan opted for 1/16” (3/32”?) balsa skins.

Due to the unique shape of the fuselage, there are no commercially built spinners that would look right, so Arkady machined up a male/female mould from which we are able to fabricate our own carbon fibre spinners.  The main body of the spinner weighs only 6 grams!

I employed electric eFlite 10-15 retracts and I’m currently using a special timer produced by Igor Burger.  The timer has worked flawlessly, however the retracts appear to be a little under powered as they have recently began to stall out before fully retracting into the wing.   The good news though is that the Mig flies extremely well, even with the gear welded down.   I should mention that Tim Wescott also designed a retraction system utilizing his world famous TUT timer, but as yet I have not tested it.

Some of the other answers to questions I am sure you will ask.  Model weight with retracts - 67 ounces (67 without retracts).  Badass 3515 710 kv motor.  Burger active timer plus his retract timer.  Jeti Spin 66 ESC and Thunder Power 6S 2800 battery.  Burger hollow 12x5 flat back prop.

And yes, every time we needed to resolve an issue, we would ask ourselves, how would Charles do this?  😂

Oops, The weights should have been 69 ounces with retracts, 67 ounces without.

Chris,

Nice job and a really neat job on color scheme selection.  I remember you telling me something about it at VSC. The MiG 3 has been on my bucket list for some time and I will choose the winter color scheme also.

Just wondering:

1.  Where are you getting air for the motor?

2.  Is that a gap between the flap and the wing TE?

Hi Keith, it was good to see you down at the VSC.   I think the last time we got to talk was the Golden State Stunt Championships when they were still held in Clovis, CA?

1.  There is an air inlet on the bottom of the fuselage just behind the spinner.  Air is redirected past the motor and then back into the electronics bay and across the ESC.  The side scoops also allow air the enter the fuselage.   The exit is on the bottom of the lower air scoop.

2. There is a gap between the wing trailing edge and the flaps, however I think the light reflection makes it appear to be more than it actually is.  But don’t worry, I gap seal all my control surfaces prior to maiden flights.

Cheers, Chris
