Finished putting the finishing touches on my new F1 airplane. When I decided to paint it as the 2023 Ferrari SF23, I was hoping they would have more success than how the F1 season is playing out…oh well.
In any case, my goal for this airplane was to build it 5oz lighter than its sister I’ve flown for the last couple of years. I shattered that goal and have an airplane 10oz lighter than the other airplane. Some other changes I made to the airplane are:
- Deeper fuselage for more side area
- Less overhang on the rudder aft of the elevators. The other airplane is very long, barely fits in the car and I have a feeling it doesn’t make the straight legs look as straight because it’s so long.
- full span flaps with a trim tab on the inboard wing, much like Dave’s Thundergazer. This gives me 4 square inches more flap area on the outboard wing. The other plane has a 2 square inch area tab on the outboard flap and it helped a lot!
- smaller rudder, for looks, weight reduction and to keep it from weathervaning as bad in the wind
Some more technical bits:
Span: 63”
Wing area: 690 squares
Tail area: 30%
Power: PA 75
Prop: Eather 13-4.1 three blade
Weight: 62oz!
First flights coming soon

Whats next?
A Red Bull????
BTW, real nice work Matt.
Hope the "other" new model is progressing well!
-
Very nice Matt!

I love the side scoops on the fuse, and the canopy. What color blue is it? And what kind of paint on the plane?

LL~ LL~ LL~ I’m not sure! The next one will be a take apart version. I have some ideas floating in my head. My wife doesn’t want another red plane but I can’t promise that
Three weeks to go! She’s still perfectly content as of the last doctors visit last week. I have her name painted on the right side of the cockpit as my copilot. Hope it brings good luck!

The blue on the canopy is a mix of Brodak silver and Randolph Bahama Blue. All paint is Randolph dope with a little Brodak here and there. Clear is automotive, Omni MC161. Counting the base gray, there are 10 different colors on the airplane. Everything is painted, including the Ferrari emblems with the exception of the little ones on the fuse

Very good Matt, looking forward to seeing it fly. Good on you!!!!

Wow!!! That looks awesome, and 10 oz. lighter than your other. You are going to be hard to beat, my friend :) Hope to see you in Houston :)

I like it!

I painted my Wife's name on my Endgame II. House burned down the next week. I doubt there was a connection, but...... LL~

First five flights today. To say I’m thrilled is an understatement! The only change I made during the day was shimming the tank. It flies that good already. It carves an excellent round loop but also has a blinding corner with an excellent lock. Need to tune the new engine some but flying qualities are outstanding right from the start. It feels like my hand is attached to the wingtip

Nice looking ship Matt. The scoops...did you add those for any aerodynamic reason? Purposely induced drag?

The scoops are purely for looks

Won’t make it to Houston this year. My parents are going to be in town to meet their first granddaughter! She’s due in a couple weeks. I might get myself to Dallas, we’ll see how things go with her!

Bravo Young man! You've got your Ducks in the right order (I think I made up that stupid remark myself). I predict you'll remember the first time you hold her closer to your heart than your first Walker Cup (which I also predict!")
Beautiful new plane that flies great. Tough to beat that...but "she will"! Give her Mama a hug from us!

Oh my gosh, Matt. I did not know you were going to be a daddy. Congratulations!!! You have much to be thankful for. God bless you, and future family. See you soon :)
-
...and I knew you when you were just a little kid hanging around with your grandfather. n~
You're not a kid anymore, and I don't think anyone will ever mistake you for one again. You are a full grown, talented, dedicated, and, dare I say, dangerous competitor. Good on ya'.
Your new airplane looks just killer!
Bob Hunt
Thanks Bob!! I made a bold prediction with this airplane. It’s that good! We’ll see if I’m right!

Thanks Gaylord! Appreciate it! Hope to see you in Dallas, hopefully she’ll let me sleep that night!

Let's hope the power unit is better than the Ferrari unit this season.

Let's hope the power unit is better than the Ferrari unit this season.
In the shakedown, perfect reliability was shown, way more power than the other motor and borderline fuel economy as of right now

Now that's funny! Due in May, contest in June. If your lucky, you'll be sleeping by the team trials!

Another 5 flights today. Still haven’t touched the trim but currently battling a leak somewhere in the fuel system, most likely the tank. Will have to take it all apart and check everything
