Aluminum Question

For all you metallurgists; for our applications such as engines, does 356 HAVE to heat treated and, is 713 actually a better material for engine cases than 356?

In 36 years of Aerospace and commercial machining, I'm pretty certain that all the castings I ever machined or inspected were 356, if that means anything.  :-\ Steve

From comments I've seen, as-cast aluminum is soft and "gummy".  Even if strength weren't an issue operationally, soft gummy aluminum is a pain in the wazoo to machine -- any manufacturer is going to want to heat treat it just to make it machine nicely.

Dunno about the alloy -- what makes you think 713 would be better?

Didn't mean better, just 713 doesn't seem to require post cast heat treat. Somewhat more brittle than 356.
