I've finished my new plane for the 2009 (and hopefully more) season.
For the first time in 5 years I won't be flying a Saturn at this years Nats.
The new one is called the Furias 96. I started with a 96% version of my
brother Doug's Furias and then made a couple of adjustments to the
numbers and ended up with the Furias 96. It has 650 sq. in. of wing
with a 59.25" span. Power is the new OS 56 FS-A, and it has plenty of
power. It has no problem pulling this plane around, even though it is
about 5 oz. over it's target weight. It still performs nicely, and after 14
flights so far I am quite happy with the results.

Looks great!

Only 31 days left till I get to see this puppy in person. Man time starts to feel short when you start to count how many days, or weekends, or worse yet- potential practice sessions, are left until the Nats. Subtract a couple sessions for rain outs, etc. and... Eeeek!

The prop is an Eather 12 x 4 that has been repitched to almost 6.
The target weight was 64, but it's a good 5 more than that. I tried
a different primer this time. It filled great, but Doug and I both suspect
that it adds quite a bit of weight in the process.

Yep, the new OS 56 FS-A is really powerful. The advertisements
claim an additional 20% hp over the previous generation OS 52 FS,
and I don't doubt it. With the OS 52 I was using Powermaster YS 20/20
fuel (20% nitro). I always used that fuel, no matter the conditions
and it always used the same amount. With the 56 I have cut down
the nitro to about 15%. The motor just ran too hard with the 20%
nitro.

The prop is slightly bigger. With the 52 I used a 13 x 4 Eather 3 blade
that was cut down to 11.75" and repitched to about 5.5. With the 56 I'm
using a 12 x 4 Eather 3 blade repitched to about 6. I have 2 other props
to try out that are a bit longer, but haven't had a chance to yet.

The motor runs consistenly throughout the pattern, just as the 52
always does. It's pretty much set it and forget it.

Richard: There is a small set of Mooneyes on each of the landing
gear skirts. All of my planes have a set somewhere on them.

The motor weighs 16 oz. including the muffler. The muffler
is very nice, it is adjustable on 3 different axis. I've also
replaced the carb with a UHP manifold/venturi setup.

I would like to see Steve use the smaller venturi. He simply does not need the power... The run of the OS engine is very impressive.

Furias reeks of awesomness! Couple of quick questions:

* How much fuel, and do you use pressure, uniflow, you know the usual questions.

* You said you cut back from 20% to 15% nitro - do you think you will go to 10%?

Dennis: I'm using the always reliable Sullivan plastic tank plumbed
the same way we always do it; pressure line u-turned to the front.
I'm running with pressure and using about 3.5 oz. per flight. This is
what I was using with the OS 52 also. So far, it seems really good
on 15%, but we'll see if I need to cut back any up in the good Muncie air.
With the 52 I never changed nitro amount. Once I found what worked
I always stayed there. It was not uncommon for me to go an entire
contest weekend without touching the needle, changing nitro, or
changing the amount of fuel used per flight.
