A bit more info please. Does he fly now? How well? Did you have a size in mind? Have a motor already that you are planing to use? ARFs or no ARFs? Otherwise one of the mid size ARFs might be a good starting point. Low investment of time and $ as it may not last long, maybe a Flight Streak or Gotcha style plane (name escapes me at the moment)( Ukey 35, I just remembered). Looking to build? Twister comes to mind or a Brodak warbird. Many choices.

Steve,

We are using three different Brodak Super Clown ARFs with OS LA 25s and Brodak 25s as trainers for our kids group.  The ARFs go together easily and are really tough------they will take lots of abuse.  The flaps aren't needed but we hook them up anyway---no problems that we have seen using them.

The Flite Streak ARF is decidedly not in the same league as the Super Clown----breaks far too easily.

Cheers,
Jim

Steve,

Also consider the Ukie trainers ----highly prefab and even tougher than the Super Clown.

I think they are sold by an individual but don't remember who.  Someone will check in with the needed info.......

Sig Shoesrtring with a Fox .35 (Or O.S. .25 )
Ab Inito . . . ,  Then a Goldberg Shoestring .

Both with sufficent tip weight and engine offset
to keep the lines tight. And heavy lines so they dont stretch to much.

Mario Andretti would probly tell you elastic steering columns arnt the hot set up . . . too . . . ?

For a tough easy to build plane that will withstand a lot of abuse if flown over grass consider the Flite Streak Trainer. It uses a solid balsa ( plank ) wing, that is much tougher than a built up wing. A solid balsa profile fuse with hardwood engine bearers and ply doublers make a sturdy set-up. An O.S. LA .15 will work for basic flight, a .20 or .25 will really haul it around.

It won't do much in the way of stunts, but will get him through take-off / landing, flying level, climbs and dives and with a good engine you can probably get in a loop or two. I had one that gave a bunch of people their first successful flights and survived many a 1 point landing into the dirt.

You can put a simple finish on it with a couple coats of spray can auto primer sanded smooth and Rust-o-Leum spray paint for color.

Here is the link to Brodaks catalog for pics and details.
