New Petra 9

The new Petra 9 has some changes over the last one I built. PA 75RE with a header muffler, Morris controls, Hunt lost foam wing, 8oz. plastic tank, Brodak paint, redesigned rudder, and wing gear on this one. Glassed front half of fuse, polyspan on the wing. Don't know the weight yet, but it seams lite so far. As you can see I am addressing some areas after blocking coat. Hope to have it done by the end of March.

Looking great... If my new ship had a larger canopy and a bit smaller rudder we would almost have twins.. Is the wing one you came up with or is it something from Bob's stock. Will try to post a photo when I go to the shop in the morning.

Bob, the wing is basically a Randy Smith SV 23. My flaps are a little bigger, and I changed the design of the tips. Looking foreward to seeing your project.

Bob, I see what your saying. They do look a little the same. Is that a 56 or a 72 4 stroker you have there? Nice job, keep us informed. Oh, what's the name?

Carbon veil over wood put on with finishing resin. Trying to keep them straight and strong.. Not really a fast builder just devoting allot of time.. 8 to 12 hours a day for 5 weeks just to get this far..

Allen, It's a Saito 62.. A 56 would be plenty but having two 62's I need to use the silly things   The name is "Latency" Just came to me one day while working on a computer..

Petra 9 already looks like a winner.  Whatcha got in mind for colors?  PA 75 and all the other "numbers" ring true too.  Only thing I thought I had you convinced to build an ELECTRIC this year (NOT!!!)

Latency looks really good too, but I'm with the other guys - it seemed like it came together fast.  I would have thought the name was HIGH URGENCY!

Hi Dennis,

It is a bit of an urgency, I really want to have it finished, trimmed and hopfully a bunch of practice flights before Brodaks. I could take my Score as I feel I could do pretty good with it but don't want to give up the pretty points. Only a few small details to take care of and the finish process starts. Have no idea what the paint scheme will be, probably figure it out when it's at the same stage as Allen's.

Dennis, thanks for the kind words, and maybe I'll have it ready for the "Nats" this summer. Not sure about the color and graphics yet, I am doing some drawings now,, just nothing that excites me yet.

I just don't see electric in my future. I really love my present equipment and have no reason to change. I go to the field, fill it with fuel flip the  prop and go fly. Land and after many flights, wipe it down and go home. Not at all like the old days where I would work on the setup all day and maybe get a couple of successful flights in. I just love a proven product, and this airplane and the PA 75 is there. But for those who like to test the boundaries of modeling, more power to you all. And I will watch and apploud you, and marvile at your success, but it's just not me. I am satisfied.

OOPS I'm sorry, I thought it was obvious that I was just pulling your leg about electric.  I did not mean to sound like anything else, you have a (another) FIRST CLASS bird in Petra 9 and a A PA75 is as good as it gets for power and its dependable as a box of rocks.

I think we are in one of those "golden ages" where we have never had a broader or deeper selection of really outstanding engines available:  all the great engies of the past (Fox SuperTigre K&B etc) plus the present (PA's, RoJetts, Saito, Evolution, etc) with choices from .20 to .90 (and beyond) - it is almost harder to pick a BAD engine than a good one!

Hay Dennis, I know you were, and I pray I didn't come across in a bad way. This is a fun hobby and fun people to fly and chat with. Don't ever take me too serious, this is all in FUN. Electric, glow, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, they are all good.
I Hope we get a chance to fly together this summer, contest or just for fun. Are you going to fly at Detroit in the May contest? If the weather is right, I'll be there. W e l l,,, it's back to the work shop.

I paid a visit to Roger Wildmans shop this past Tuesday and took my Nobler and the new Petra for a weight in. Here in central Indiana the official scale is that of Roger. So the Nobler came out 42 ozs. on the nose. The Petra 9 in the blocking coat with engine, prop, wheels and everthing attached came in at 48.8 ozs. I'm very pleased with them both. The true test will be, can the Nobler take off in the grass at the "Nats" this year. .

Allen, use bigger wheels when flying on grass.  Some of the modern stuff doesn't look right to me with the little itty bitty wheels.  Of course I fly on grass 90+ % of the time.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday
