Hey Doc; My last one flew really well. It wasn't as pretty, But I liked it alot. I  flew it for almost 5 years, and it was probably the easiest plane to fly that I have built to date.

I forgot to say what it was finished with. Both the old and the new one were med. silk span, and sig dope, all brushed. I don't use any filler. The letters and numbers on the new one are cut from gold tissue, and doped on. On the old blue one, the letters and mumbers are cut from red tissue. The red tissue seems to fade over time, so I tried the gold on this one. The pic of the blue one was taken at VSC by Elwyn Aud. The guy is a genius with a camera.

Thank you guys for the kind words. I think the Magician is highly underated by many, as some think the stab needs to be moved back, and other mods. I have found, as have others, that it fly's very well  built in it's stock configuration. Mine generally come out  a little on the heavy side, at between 35 to 40 oz. so I use the movable flap option as shown on the Midwest plan. I agree, it is a very fun to build, and easy to fly plane. With a McCoy 40, it should be very good.

What a beautiful model, there is just something about that color scheme with the redhead engine and metal tank that makes this plane. Very nice job!  j1

Hi Jim,

When I first saw the picture of your Magician I was swept back about 40 years!!  That looks just like what an excellent builder would have produced back in about '64.  It looks outstanding in a great "Nostalgic" way!

On your RH 40, are you planning to use a muffler?  If so, have you done anything to the piston/sleeve to keep it alive with the extra heat?  Best prop, believe it or not, that I have used on the RH 40s is a Rev-Up 10-6 EW.  Try one if you have any.  That tip came a ways back from Tom Lay, along with the muffler danger to the engine life.

Once again, gorgeous ship!   y1

Thanks you guys, for the acolades. Bill; I think I broke my last Revup 10-6 EW about 6 months ago. Phooey! My good friend Joe Gilbert, thinks this is the only real prop :) I have not done anything to the piston sleeve, except to add about .014 to the head clearance, to make it more friendly on 10% nitro. I am not going to run a muffler, and am thinking of trying a 10-8 prop. John Wright said he is running that prop on his Magician at 6500 RPM, and it is very quiet. I have been running a 10-5 APC on my McCoy 40, and it is working very well, and not really to loud. Does have a nice bark to it though.

Hi Jim,

The McCoy RH 35s and 40s have there own sound, don't they?  Best sounding of the old engines IMHO.  #^

Very nice, Jim! I like that high contrast color scheme, it looks really hot! I've got some 35RHs and really like the Magician. Do you think its enough power for one? Didn't Midwest make a Magician Jr., a .15 size stunter?I can't remember due to my CRS disability! ??? I never had a Magician, but after seeing yours, I think I'd like to get one! y1

Hi Richard,

The McCoy RH 35 in good shape will do fine on a Magician.
The 35 does a really nice 4-2 run.  Use at least 25% (28%-29& is better)castor, 5% or 10% nitro, and avoid a lean run like the plague!!!!!!!  One hot run and the old Red Heads usually die.  :'(

I really like the Red Head McCoys, they just had too soft pistons.  A 10-5 or 10-6 TF paddle blade, a 10-6 B-Y&O, or similar is a good prop.  A lighter wood prop seems to help the engine.

Don't I remember hearing that Tom LAy had a technique for hardening the pistons of the old McCoy RH's???

BTW, did anyone else see the customized McCoy .29 that someone has developed? Went on eBAY for $45, which is probably too low a price to support a production run, but it was a pretty engine, and supposedly addressed all the metallurgical shortcomings of the original.

Bill-I used to have an early 70's Chipmunk( not the Super Chipmunk!) with one of these 35 RH(Lightning Bolt) on it, and flew it with a Nylon 10-6 TF.IIRC,It flew slow, but had a nice 4-2 break. I think I was using Fox Superfuel at the time. Sounds like it will be perfect for the Magician!
There were 4 or 5 versions of the 35, I think. The racing RI  RH, the Sportsman(non RH), magnesium polished one- RH, and then the Lightning Bolt RH. Then testors bought them and did that boxy looking thing with a blackhead that was usually full of metal filings!!

Ralph- I got your VM awhile ago..worked in the darkroom all night, slept all day. I'll be home tomorrow getting ready for my surgery on Tuesday. I'll call you tomorrow...

Tom indeed does do a modification to the McCoys that allows muffler usage, and more normal "wear out" time for the Red Heads.

Simpliest way to improve the RH 29 and 35 is to get a Series 21 engine of the same size and swap the cylinder jug and ringed piston.  They will swap directly in.

Unfortunately it isn't a drop in swap for the 40.  :'(

I have one of these "hybrid" 29 on my Super Clown.  It runs much better (and 4-2s better) than it did with the original lapped set up.
