Title: New MA 3 Blade Prop
Post by: Paul Taylor on September 19, 2007, 04:07:52 PM
I put my new MA three Blade prop on my SkyRay two weekends ago. It was real windy. I was impressed with the line tension in the overheads. I was confident enough that I flew my SkyRay over my Twister. I was just not impressed with my Twister the last time I flew it. Something is wrong with it for sure, just don't know what. That will be in another post.

Anyway Thumbs up on the three blade MA on my SkyRay. AP^

Good news!   HH%%

This is the same Skyray that you reported a few weeks back having very little line tension, correct?
I know you are running an iron piston FP 25 on it.  What was the old prop?
Did you change the needle setting at all?

I am still waiting for the time I can get out to try mine.

n~ What RPM settin were you using on that 20 with the Skyray ?  The ones that I got checked out to be about 3 1/2" on the pitch gage...
Re pitched one to five, but haven't had a chance to try it yet... n~

I am not sure, I need to tack it. My pit guy Arlan set the needle, cause I had forgot my tack. He said it will real touchy on the needle setting. It did seem a little fast but I was on 52 the first time and 57 foot lines for the contest.

I did the whole beginner pattern in less the 5 mins. 4.30ish.

I will try and tack it and time my lap time next time out.

I have heard from some people that some of the props are under pitched. I checked some of mine and the pitch seems to vary. I don't know if this is because they need to let them cool longer in the mold. I will have to talk to them when I get back.

I spoke to Scott Riese a couple times before I left on vacation, but not lately. I did see he was having health problems on one post. Steve was doing some testing. He purchased 12 props and some were right on and others under pitched. When  spoke to him, he had flown with a pitch corrected prop and I believe he liked it as well as some of the $40.00>$50.00 props.. I was trying to get him to write a post on the procedure. Basically you need a pitch gage and about 200 degree water. Soften up about 4"> 5" of the blade and twist slightly. It takes a little time to get the touch. I pitched a couple and had to pitch them back down do to over twisting. Sorry, I did not get to do anymore testing. I did put a couple of flights on one right out of the package and it worked very well on an ARF Smoothie with a B40.
It looks like it will work very well and you can repitch them to 4.5>5.5, etc. to match any airplane. Hope to do more flying when I get home.

a 3 blade 10in. prop is a lot of prop for a 20 or 25, even if it is only 3.5 in. pitch.  No wonder the needle valve was touchy.

Thanks Bruce for the info,  I guess nobody responded to my post some time ago.  Will have to dig out the pitch guage Jim Dunkin made for us when I was trying to compete in F2C.  As he stated it is use as a reference tool as it may not match any other pitch gauge.  Will let you know.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday
