New Zero
« on: August 02, 2010, 06:31:54 PM »
Well, after much procrastination, kid's practices and trying to get ready for the Na ts, I finally finished my new Zero. It's a little slimmer and according to Indy scales, a little lighter than the last one @ 66oz. A few flights on Sunday showed that it has potential. Hopefully I can get it out of it. As usual with my planes, the pictures look better than the real thing!

That is VERY nice!!! y1 Looks like the GeoBolt/ Thunderbolt wing? Awesome, awesome model, please give us some more details.

Your post here is great timing for some inspiration on my end. I'm currently working on a Brodak Zero that I am modifying quite a bit. There won't be much "Brodak" left when I'm through with it though. I've got a ways to go yet...

Thanks guys,
Phil: power is PA65RE with header muffler

Dennis: the plan is to fly it at FCM if I can get some more practice with it, if not there is next year.

Warbird: the wing is a Randy Smith Tempest II with some modifications. A great wing! The rest is Tom Morris controls, polyspan covering on wing, carbon veil over the rest, Randolph dope.  I also have the profile Zero ready for assembly. The hope is to paint them same and go have fun with them.

Take care!

Mike,
Now that's what a semi scale stunter should look like! Seems that the only zeros that I have seen are profiles. Good luck, it should be a great flyer.

Mike, from what I see you have one gorgeous Zero.  You may know where all the little dings are, but don't tell the judges.  They may not see them and give you the 20 points it deserves.  If not, make up for by flying.  I like it.   H^^

Ahh-So, now for the real question, who's gonna kit this one? Sure appears to be a worthy candidate! S?P S?P S?P

Hi Mike, Looks like you did a model of a little known Zero that was on the drawing boards for 1946, but the war ends. They had found out about the Grumman Bearcat and needed a plane to also take on the B-29's. The extended cowling housed the largest radial they could find. They just kept bolting radial engine cylinder banks together!  Seriously, its a beautiful model. All the best and thanks for sharing it.   #^  Mike

Hi Mike, are there any published drawings of that model? That would be cool to replicate. Thanks for the info!

Mike, I actually make that information up based on some facts. The Model has a larger nose length than a typical Zero. I hope you enjoyed the poetic license with the facts.  H^^

I feel really stupid.  What I was trying to say was that the photos don't do it justice...It is a very cool airplane.

Rick, don't feel bad,  the old DOC has trouble with the key board also.  And as I typing instructor back in my sophmore year stated we think faster than we can type.  I would love to see the Zero in person myself.   H^^

Mike, you have become the master of the Zero!  As expected, it's gorgeous and will probably fly even slower than the others.  (But it still doesn't get you the bedroom instead of the couch! LL~)
I'm looking forward to seeing you very soon!

I sure hope the new book is available by then - it's supposed to be out of the printers now, but I've not seen any delivered here.  I can't wait much longer to see it, the publisher outdid himself on the cover design, it's stupendous!
On the accommodations, I can always sleep with Muppet if need be!  (I get in the doghouse here, may as well do it there!)

Sounds good!  Roger and I got in a session this evening. I'm really liking some of things on the Zero. I tried a new prop and think it will be better, but ran out of daylight before I got it right. Hopefully will get another opportunity soon. Here's hoping the book gets delivered soon!
